I googled that adapter and it looks exactly like the one I'm using at work to connect my HDMI laptop to a VGA projector so it should work just fine.

It depends on the GPU. On my 1050ti(and on other GPUs from 1000 series) a HDMI to VGA won't work at all. I've tried several when trying to connect my second monitor but nothing worked at all. DPort to VGA will work, I suppose. But you need an active converter.
