Hi all,

Okay, final thread on smartphone decisions, I promise :)

I think I have narrowed down my choice to the OnePlus 5 for a few reasons:

- Blazing fast hardware

- Good screen

- I like the design

- Good price / performance

- Near stock Android

The only thing I wasn't sure about was software updates. People around the web seem to think OnePlus isn't that great at providing software updates. But I thought, which manufacturer is?

The Oneplus 3 came out in 2016, shipped with Android 6 (M), now it will get Android 7 (N) and Android 8 (O), and that is it. People are up in arms that Android 8 will be the last version, but to get 2 major software updates seems to be "normal" for Android phones?

My Moto X 2014:

- Shipped with 4 Kitkat

- Got update to 5 Lollipop

- Got update to 6 Marshmallow.. and that was it.

Hell, even the Google Pixel:

- Shipped with Android 7 (N)

- Will get Android 8 (O)

- Will get Android 9 (P) and that will be the last update.

By that rate the Oneplus 5 should: Ship with Nougat (7), get Android 8 (O) and get Android 9 (P) as last update?

People were upset that they promised the Oneplus 2 would get Nougat, but didn't, so it only got 1 software update. I just hope then that they are not lying about the Oneplus 3/3T and now 5?

So what do you guys think? Is Oneplus really worse than any other manufacturer? Samsung is notoriously slow and bad at providing updates as well.

Oneplus did lie about the Oneplus 2 getting Nougat. What are the chances that they are lying again about the 3/3T and 5? Would this prevent you from buying their projects?

Thanks!

one plus has a shitty story with software updates, avoid them if you want actually confirmed updates good customer support.

wait for the new pixel or go into the modding community, if you want consistent updates.

Yeah but Motorola's support for software updates has also gone to shit since they got bought by Lenovo. I cannot think of a company that DOES have good support with software updates.

Even Google itself, people were upset Pixel only got updates until Android P!

it will get P http://bgr.com/2017/04/28/google-pixel-android-update-android-p/

not really, those are idiots, Google supports their devices for 2 major android version( 2 years) and an extra year of security update, this has been the rule since the Nexus program.

Hate to agree but Most companies dont usually give more than 2 years runtime, and the oneplus 3t is no exception. I've learned to accept that fact in modern business practices.

The pentile screen really isn't that noticeable (Next to a Galasy S7 on 1440p mode). If you were to use it daily I doubt you will just sit there and contemplate on how you can see ALL THE PIXELS omg!!!. (You really cant)

I feel like they're tyring to turn the tides with the 3 and actually deliver O, but Who knows. All I have is the huge rom accessibility for the 3t so i dont really care if we get O or not.

The only thing I have a grudge on oneplus is them saying "we are only a small company" its been proven multiple times that they have a parent company named OPPO and that they dont design shit but just copy from their parent. The "oh we're too poor for manufacturing curved displays" Is just them being stupid, and oppo probably not having the resources to make it.

If you want something close to stock with a decent screen, Theres plenty of phones to release. You can always wait and be in a continuous loop or just buy now and be happy.

If you like stock, and a fast experience, the Oneplus 5 is a great device. If you like skinned, and fast S8 is also a very good device.

The motorola Force/Play Z2's are decent, Not a fan of the Plastic scratchy display on the force but other than that, its been good so far.

Pair either with the battery mod and you will be going for days without chargeing.

Decent phones coming out with a clean display and close to stock is the note 8, V30, idk if you like the essential though

also to add, if they keep going higher in price they're gonna not be flagship "killers" anymore

90% of the people who use this forum should be smart enough to flash a custom rom themselves anyway, my 2013 Xperia SP runs like a dream (considering how old it is) on 7.1.1

The problem is SafetyNet.

Basically, if the API detects that your phone is rooted and/or running unverified firmware (basically a custom ROM), it will trip and some apps will not work and you can’t even see Play Store listings.

Sure, there is Magisk but who knows how long people will keep finding weaknesses until Google one day just decides to update the API to the point where it becomes nearly impossible to fool?

That’s exactly what I mean. Magisk Hide.

It uses exploits to effective hide root access from SafetyNet. But Google has been patching these vulnerabilities.

Huh that is interesting I never thought of that option. That should be a good alternative to the original firmware.

Are you talking about CyanogenMod and LineageOS and such? Are these available for most popular phones?

I just don't want to run into the fact that 3-4 years down the line, apps need a more current version of Android to run and I'm left out. That happened to me with my old iPhone 3GS that was stuck on iOS 6. If I could update with a custom OS, that wouldn't be an issue I suppose?

THanks for the feedback and suggestions.

Yeah the Oneplus 5 seems to tick all the boxes I want. I think the screen will be good enough for me. I think my Moto X 2014 was pentile as well, never bothered me.

Is there good custom rom availability for Oneplus phones? Which ones do you recommend?

Thanks!

CyanogenMod for the most part IS now LineageOS. The XDA forums for each phone usually have the best roms listed. My Xperia is using AICP which is based off lineage http://dwnld.aicp-rom.com/

OP phones have good custom rom availability, though without an SD card slot, rom installation can be a little trickier.

Except Oneplus phones are hands down the best phones for rooting and custom rom because unlike other manufacturers they are not hellbent in making it a PITA to do so. Unlocking bootloader couldn't be easier. Oneplus phones have among the most active custom rom and modding communities simply because of mod friendly devices, and the fact that comparative low prices gives it a customer base that has the highest propensity to make the most of their money through modding.

Also there is nothing wrong with having 1080p at 5.5". Its the same as on the OP3T and no one complained about it. In fact a lower resolution (as long as it isn't sub 1080p) will turn out advantageous for performance in the most graphically intensive applications. There is little benefit in raising the resolution in exchange for making the processor work harder and consume more power.

Thanks for the feedback!

I ordered the Oneplus 5, seems like a solid phone with many options.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah I know on paper those are better phones, but I just hate all the bloatware that Samsung puts on their phones, I absolutely don't want a manufacturer skin on my Android.
Also, the design of neither of those phones really appeals to me. I like the way the Oneplus 5 looks (yeah I like the way the Iphone 7 looks too ;).

For sure everyone finds different things important in a phone, the Oneplus 5 seems to tick most of the boxes for me.

I've had a Oneplus 3 since launch and so far I've had very few problems with it. I moved to the beta builds and it's not uncommon for me to receive an update at least once a month. Often they implement new features that I wouldn't have even thought of being useful, such as parallel apps, but once implemented it becomes something of a "Why isn't this a default feature of android" kind of thing. I believe them on their promise for an android O update though i expect that it may take a little longer as the Oneplus 5 will undoubtedly come first. Great performance and while I notice the jelly scroll on my friends OP5, it's very subtle and he doesn't notice at all.
