32-bit OS architecture is getting quite old - many OS's are trying to phase it out (Mobile OS being the most successful at that) and aren't even providing 32-bit versions anymore.

Windows still has legacy 32-bit support, but expect that to drop sooner or later.

In the mean time, there's no reason NOT to use 64-bit, unless you have some hardware that only works w/ 32-bit.

64-bit

Main reason is that it actually officially works with over 4GB of memory.

The Workhorse (AMD-powered custom desktop)

The Portable Workstation (Apple MacBook Pro 16" 2021)

SoC: Apple M1 Max (8+2 core CPU w/ 32-core GPU) | RAM: 32GB unified LPDDR5 | Storage: 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD | OS: macOS Monterey

The Communicator (Apple iPhone 13 Pro)

SoC: Apple A15 Bionic | RAM: 6GB LPDDR4X | Storage: 128GB internal w/ NVMe controller | Display: 6.1" 2532x1170 "Super Retina XDR" OLED with VRR at up to 120Hz | OS: iOS 15.1

My laptop from 2009 is a Core 2 Duo and it's 32-bit only. But yeah, Pentium 4s are 32-bit.

You sure it isn't just the OS installed that was 32 bit?

I don't know. It was a Dell Inspiron from 2008 and it has Core 2 Duo, 3 GB RAM (or 4 I'm not sure) and bundled with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. All I thought it was just a 32-bit processor so in 2009, I bought a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.

Well, there's why. Budget laptops (with relatively low memory) of the day tended to get 32 bit Windows, even if they can run 64 bit just fine if you so choose. Not as though many applications of the day took advantage of it beyond the increased RAM limitation.

I'm not sure about this but Windows 10 at the moment can boot either on 32 or 64-bit depending on the hardware it runs on. Kinda like how OS X Snow Leopard and beyond can boot 32 or 64 bit depending on the hardware.

Windows Vista through to Windows 10 let's you choose whether you (or the oem) want to install the 32 bit variant, or the 64 bit variant. 64 bit processors can run either. 32 bit processors are restricted to the 32 bit Windows.
