Is overclocking ram worth it

Well, in that case it doesn't really matter that much then unless you're doing something really special that really needs fast RAM (literally almost nothing)

the only practical reason to OC your RAM would be for the experience.

however, you might get a few percent better. like 2% better minimums or something. nothing special.

depends

Depends on what platform.

If you're on a modern intel socket (LGA 1155, 1156, 1150, 1151) then it might give you a few percents better performance, but it's not really worth your time for the performance gains. if you're OC'ing on those platforms, do it for the fun of the process, not the destination.

on Ryzen, it's very important, since the infinity fabric in the CPU is linked to RAM speed. up to 20% improvement on Ryzen with fast RAM.

if you're using an APU or Integrated Graphics, then it's worth it, since it essentially makes your VRAM faster, since your normal RAM becomes VRAM when using an integrated GPU. (and normal RAM is slow enough to hurt performance when used as VRAM)

Hi, i was wondering is overclocking ram was a good idea and is it worth it

Depends.

So there is overclocking and readily available settings (XMP) on your ram. Overclocking ram past its rated speeds can be very tricky.  Usually it involves slowing timings down to get clocks up and is thus not really worth it

Also Intel only sees minor gains after a certain  point  (there are some exceptions concerning productivity).

Ryzen definitely lives fast RAM and gains in almost every scenario. But gains also get small past 3ghz.

For me it makes my system unstable

Well, that means you OC'ed it too far without giving it enough voltage.

with enough tweaking and voltage, you can OC your RAM to a point where it is stable.

I have one in my signature. The people saying it doesn't matter on Intel are completely wrong. They are clearly not looking in the right places. Even with the fastest Intel CPU's and the fastest GPU's, memory overclocking will always aid in minimum framerates in situations in which you are I/O bound by the CPU. Plenty of games fall into this category, and scale well even on my 5.2ghz 7700k at 1440p.

That being said, there is a point where diminishing returns kicks in, and it becomes less beneficial. The first area that happens is at about 2800mhz, where gaming performance efficiency is at it's highest, and once more at around 3200. After 3200mhz, you start to see less dramatic boosts in minimum framerates. Just keep that in mind.

It does indeed scale extremely well on Ryzen (as average framerates are impacted dramatically alongside minimums) but the context here is Intel, so I see no need to provide Ryzen information at this time.

If you really want to overclock your ram, make sure you have a Z series platform, and shoot me a PM. If your board is decent enough, I don't see why we couldn't do 3000mhz+ after a few PM's between each other.

z270 k6 gaming from asrock

Awesome, I am most familiar with ASrock. Ok. Manually set vDIMM to 1.35v, VCCIO to 1.14, VCCSA to 1.15, and set the memory frequency to 3000mhz. Set your primary timings as such: 15-17-17-34-2 (2 being command rate). Try to restart and see if the PC posts. If it does not post, clear CMOS and try C16-18-18-36-2. That should post.

I really dont want to have to reset cmos, last time i did this i had to raplace the battery and to do this i had to take up my gpu which was all nicely cable managed and i scratched my motherboard. Should i do the second option so i dont have to reset cmos.

And also i thought the lower the latency the faster the ram would be ? i think i am just getting a bit confused

You don't need to replace the battery. Simply remove your power supply cable from the PSU, and hold your cases power button for 60 seconds. This will clear it enough for you to make it back into bios to try again. If you are not comfortable with this compromise, memory overclocking is not going to be for you. It's a ton of trial and error. Mostly errors.
