How much can I sell this system for?

Hello there,

so I'm thinking on switching my system to a Ryzen 7 1700 or a Coffe Lake i7 8700K based one in the following months. My card is a 1080 Ti and that will stay for the new system, since my Gsync 1440p 165Hz monitor needs it.

These are the parts (NO GPU):

  • CPU: i7 4790K
  • CPU Cooler: Cryorig H5 Ultimate
  • Motherboard: MSI Z97 PC Mate
  • RAM: 16GB 4x4 DDR3 1600Mhz
  • Storage: 256GB Samsung EVO SSD + 1TB WD Blue HDD
  • Case: Zalman Z11 Neo
  • PSU: FSP Raider 750W 80+ Silver

Everything is in good state (need to clean dust off before selling though), and yes CPU and RAM have been overlocked, but not for too long and not too hard either.

So I was thinking on selling it for about 700-750 euros, the new system will cost me around 1000-1100. Is that a fair price or would you pay less for the performance on offer?

PD: All of this was bought on January 2016, and back then Skylake was a lot more expensive.

Do you need a new setup? The 4790K hasn't lost much to the 7700K, it's still a beast CPU.

I can't really give you a solid answer because I don't know the cost of some of these items, and I am in Canada so I use CAD dollars, but what I will say is that you can't calculate the price on the hardware alone; just the fact that it's been used reduces the price you can ask for by a lot.  Honestly I'd be happy if I could sell my PC for 40% of what I paid for it.

CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700k
CPU Cooler: be quiet! - Dark Rock Pro 4 50.5 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI - MPG Z390 GAMING PRO CARBON
Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
Storage: Crucial P1 1tb M.2 NVME BOOT DRIVE
Video Card: MSI RTX 2070 Super
Case: NZXT - H500 (White)
Power Supply: Corsair - RMx (2018) 550 W 80+ Gold

It's a 4790K system though, so he could get a good amount. The CPU alone goes for about $220-$300 on Ebay.

I don't NEED it, seeing as the performance gain will be minimal at best, but there are things that I would like seeing improved, like watercooling, fast DDR4 RAM, an actual modular PSU (I hate the salad of cables on my PC), and so on. Yeah, I could buy some components to upgrade but it would be better to just upgrade the platform altogether instead of staying with a 3 year old one, don't you think?

Tbh I don't see a need to upgrade

I sold my 4790K+MSI Z97 gaming 5 board and 16GB of memory for 375$ and I think that guy got a real good deal lol I did that to help me switch to Ryzen.

I mainly only miss my 4790K when playing fallout 4 all my other games play the same or at least It feels the same. Now I have twice the cores however and it helps me with encoding.

Getting a new platform that one knows will be supported to 2020 is nice. I'd aim for 500$ at least for all your stuff

It won't be as good as the 8700K considering 8th generation i7 CPU's will have 6C/12T.

Yup. Still good though. I'm eventually upgrading to Ryzen myself, but that's because I have an i5 (and before that, a dual-core pentium) and do video editing. And want to game at 1440p+.

Even in that case i'd wait for coffee lake as the increase of IPC and frequency should overcome 2 more cores Ryzen will have in multithreaded tasks. Meaning I expect ryzen price cuts across the board and you could buy a 1700 for who knows maybe 50-70$ even cheaper

Good point. I'll probs stick with Ryzen though, but any price drops will be welcome.

I agree with holding onto the system, but if you did sell, I'd say just part the CPU/RAM/Mobo.  It's one of those things where people will try to get a bargain when buying a whole system, so i don't think you would get 700 euros.

Ryzen is good but if Intel prices their 8th generation CPU's competitively not only will they be better but they will be cheaper. But you know Intel, they won't lower their prices.

I agree too, I was able to get 375$ out of that should pay for his board and memory leaving him with just the CPU to buy.

If upgrading from a 4790K I highly recommend a ryzen 7 only not 5.
