32 GB RAM Worth it?

Hey guys!

Picking out some parts for a new PC and I was curious as to whether or not investing in 32 gb as opposed to 16 gb would be worth it. Purchasing 16gb would allow me to invest in a second 1080ti for 2-way SLI, while the 32gb set would cause me to purchase one 1080ti (albeit the ASUS STRIX flavor). I want my rig to last me a considerable amount of time, and I primarily game at 1440/4k resolutions. While this is the case, I do mild work in Adobe After Effects (slow render times don't bother me all that much). Would investing in a 32 gb kit be worth it for my use case? Or should 16gb be sufficient for most Triple A titles?

If you are heavy in AE then 32gbs is worth it otherwise no a second 1080ti would be better

Just keeping this here as a I would recommend 16GB or ram so you can buy the second 1080ti and get the most out of your GPU's. If you really need 32GB of ram for heavy workloads or content creation, than get the 32GB of ram. If your focus is more on gaming, than 16GB is enough ram and I would recommend buying the second 1080ti for more GPU power and less upgrades in the future.

How heavy is your After Effects use.

If you get the 32gb you can get like another SSD maybe and some other cool stuff so I would go for 32.SLI isn't that great anyways

Honestly, negligible. Mostly school projects for some CC. I'm more concerned about 16 gb being suitable for gaming in years to come.

Very few games user more than 16 GB of RAM. A GTX 1080 TI is already one of the best graphics cards available. A second one wouldn't provide much benefit. You should save your money and get neither upgrade.

it'll be fine,but you can get like more hard drive space 32gb of ram and 2 years of Humble monthly by giving up the 1080ti so I would still go with 32

Will 32 gb and a single 1080ti be powerful enough to drive 1440p 144hz? Or would adding the second 1080ti be more useful?

SLI is much much more terrible than you imagine.Yes as long as you don't like BF1 MaxSettings with 4k textures and such

Thank you for the help! As someone who mainly plays CSGO, PUBG, and OW, I wasn't sure if I could reap benefits from the 1080ti's in SLI.

 

I'm sure one 1080ti will be a significant upgrade from my current gtx 760.

Other than PUBG which is horribly optimized(doubt you can get that with a TItan X pascale SLI) you could pull of the other 2 with even a 1070

I’m going to bump this old thread. I should bump the whole internet. After reading through tons of “Is 16gb of RAM enough or should I get 32gb?” threads I see something everyone on earth is leaving out. MEMORY LEAK! Yes, the computers are much better at preventing this now, but it still happens. Not as much a problem on Apple products as Windows, but every time you open something and then close it, a tiny piece of memory is lost forever. At least until a reboot. Over enough time that MEMORY LEAKING into the abyss starts to add up. I have a feeling no one is considering this anymore because everyone is obsessed with short duration benchmark tests. They are useless. If you want to know if you need 32gb of RAM instead of 16gb, I’ll lend you my kids. You lend them your PC. They’ll watch a bunch of stupid YouTube videos about glitchy free kids games all day. Open hundreds of browsers. Open steam. Minimize it. Open 20 different games, minimize a few close a few and then watch 10 more hours of YouTube videos about the games they have running in the background. 

 

At at that point the benchmarks become completely wrong. MEMORY LEAK LIVES ON LIKE WHEN YOU WERE RUNNING WINDOWS 98 ON 133MHZ RAM. AND EVERY TIME THEY CALL YOU HAVE TO START WITH

 

“Ok I’m sorry you are experiencing this issue. Have you tried rebooting your system?

 

AND THEN YOU SPEND THE EXTRA $200 FOR 32GB RAM ON THE NEXT PC YOU BUY.

Depends what you are doing. If it is just gaming 16GB should be fine even for streaming/recording at the same time. If you are rendering lengthy videos in 4k for example you may need more. Also if you are trying to run multiple ram hoggoing task such a a minecraft server and you want to dedicate 10GB of ram or something to it then you should upgrade. But it's more for workstations if anything.
