WD Reds are the best for NAS storage, as they are meant to be fast with reads and writes and are able to withstand many reads and writes.

FreeNAS is a good open source NAS OS that is actually pretty simple to get started with. UnRAID is good as well but has a bit more of a learning curve and is a bit heavier on resources.

WD Reds are amazing NAS drives :)

The only reason I downsized my server was due to fan noise but I had 24 WD Reds going 24/7 for almost 2.5 years and never a hiccup. Even with just 8 I still get crazy good read and write speeds with them.
