There should be a recommendation by Nvidia on what the minimum psu wattage you should have. i believe 300w is minimum from what i saw if im correct

Ehhh it should be fine but if it's a shitty unit (which it likely is) I'd look at replacing it.

Well thats to allow for any power consumption for other components if they start to draw more than needed power. It gives you some head room to not worry about almost not having enough power. A CM450 psu should be very good even for future upgrades and wont cost but a few dollars more

id go minimum 300w. But have you made a pcpartpicker list. It shows you how much power it will draw via what its draw is rated at.  A CM450 psu should be very good even for future upgrades and wont cost but a few dollars more @WhoSaidThat

If this was my build i would go with 300w. Depending on what your rated power draw is, if it gets very close to maxxing out that 240 you could have issues that might shut down the pc time to time. A risk i would not be willing to take

For a good reason though, its a safety margin.

It is, and it's inflated. It's to make room for very low quality power supplies.

True, but it's inflated. Just like most cards suggest a 750w PSU, get a 550w is still more than enough, even overclocked.

You're assuming he's building fresh. He likely already has the system. So it's an entirely new expense.

If you jump of a bridge on a bungee cord, would you rather have a cord calibrated for your exact bodyweight, or maybe one that is some factor stronger?

That's a little difficult to judge. It looks to be the right form factor, but Dell provides very little info on this.

Irrelevant.

The numbers on the website are greatly inflated. Period.

True, but chances are if he's putting something into an Optiplex, it's a stop-gap until something better comes along.

You don't keep a budget machine like that when spending money on components that use significant amounts of power.

It all depends on what he wants to achieve in the end with the specific build. im building mine to eventually house 5 drives and 2 gpu's. but im keeping it under 800 for the rig and about 1100 for the setup
