[Stage one complete!] Shoebox 2.0 buildlog

Right, so for temporary CPU cooling I got the Be quiet! Dark rock TF, which should be plenty for my 4960X on a mild OC.

I did run in some clearance issues though;

The bottom fan of the Dark Rock is blocking the inner most dimm slots, so I can only run it with either just 16 gigs of RAM or with just the top fan. So single fan it is.

Also, the heatpipes protrude so much that I can't put the Titan in the top PCIe slot. So the Titan goes a slot down and i'll put the SSD in the top slot instead since it's only half-height.

I'm also having  some trouble getting the PSU in. I got the EVGA supernova 850G2 as a nice little upgrade.

So far it seems like you need to remove 2 brackets which thankfully aren't riveted in to fit longer powersupplies.

With the PC in parts, I also took the chance to clean up and repaste the motherboards chipset. I noticed the fan spinning up more regularly, and sure enough the paste under there was hard as a rock!

Just look at that shiny chipset, man microprocessing is awesome.

Allright, so I got the thing together finally, and after initial boot I got error code 00, meaning it wasn't recognising the CPU! Full on panic mode engaged!

I pulled it apart again and it all seems fine. No damage on the CPU or socket anywhere.

20170814_163953.thumb.jpg.b81fc8b7cc22796fe71089054f309023.jpg

So I guess I'll just put it back together again and try again?

For now the CPU seems dead tough :(

i finally have the system ready! it took me a while but it's up and running now, except that i can't get it to POST with all RAM slots occupied :/

i wonder what's wrong, i get code b7 when i insert more then 1 DIMM, which should mean memory error, but everything worked fine before!

anyway, here's the system how she now stands:

20170814_190304.thumb.jpg.b1e0c3223c9b4153cbbd3c48a35be466.jpg

i have no idea how to fix the memory issue. i guess i'll just start googling and see if i find anything. getting all my stuff into this tiny chassis was quite the challenge, and cable management is pretty much non-existend. the only place where you could put the cables is in the little routing area and up with the PSU, and both those tiny spaces are crammed full with cables!

for now this is where the buildlog kinda ends. i need to figure out the hardline loop, and get the hardware, but above all else i need to figure out what's the issue with the memory, because if i need to swap CPU's/boards i want to know asap!

Well, the good news is that a BIOS flash seemed to revive DIMM slot 1, but if I stick anything into slot 2 the system doesn't post. So sadly slot 2 seems dead. :( RIP

Maybe when X299 gets some mATX boards out I can make the switch, but for now I'll have to make do with only 3 sticks of RAM unfortunately.

oh man the mounting system is absolutely terrible. the included 'wrench' pretty much the most terrible thing they could have packed for this. i ended up using a ratchet instead, and almost stripped one of the standoffsO.o

that being said, it's a nice cooler tough. if i use my system for browsing and stuff like that the front fans don't even turn on, and the CPU fan stays at like 10-15%.

too bad you can still hear the Titan's jet-engine inspired cooler over everything :P

  • 3 weeks later...

Right, so I just got a replacement CPU to test my motherboard with. I really kinda hope the memory problem is in the 4960x so I won't have to find a super hard to find lga 2011 mATX replacement. :/

Anyway, the test mule is a Xeon e5-2603 I bought for 15 euros. It arrived 'sufficiently packed'

Lets take the PC apart again!

Right, so the problem is in fact the CPU! With the Xeon all 4 slots and 32Gigs are recognised and functioning.

It's sad to see the 4960x fail, but already lga 2011 processors are easier to find then replacement motherboards. :P

So I guess I'll have to find a good Xeon, or a new 4930K/4960x. The hunt is on!

If you sell your board and the CPU you can probably upgrade to a 5820K, if you want ;)

yeah that always seems like a good option, with mATX X99 boards going for about 150 over here. that would mean i also have to get new RAM tough, and i do love my dominator plats a lot :/

Dunno, you can probably get a 5820K and an X99 motherboard for 550 euros, but yeah, the 5960X would be an awesome upgrade :D
