Since he's no longer among the living, I'd say it doesn't matter much if people go through his stuff or not. If nobody ever went through or took stuff that used to belong to people who are now deceased, think of all the stuff that would be everywhere, never being touched or used again. Very wasteful.

I've gone through some of my great grandfather's belongings after he passed away, some of them had little/no value to my great grandmother (still living), so she let whoever wanted said stuff have it, and had no issue with us going through it.

Not sure what the chips say, and it's just a book that he gave me while he was still alive, i think there may have been a cd in it somewhere at one point.

Fairchild 7404 IC inverter?  That's definitely the Fairchild logo.

It looks like an old SCSI connector. My "guess" would be for either a drive, or printer.

Best Excuses:

#1(simple) "Well, I never liked that stupid thing anyway!"

#2(complex) "Obviously there was a flaw in the material, probably due to the inadvertent introduction of contaminants during the manufacturing process."

It looks like a bus terminator you would put on an unused bus to reduce noise by preventing a signal from being reflected.

EDIT: After a bit additional googleing I'm not sure anymore, that's one strange connector... It seems to be this thing, a military rack and panel connector.
