Dear community,

I follow linustechtips on youtube already for a few years now and really like the content and information on the several platforms.

It is obvious that the company has gathered an immense amount of knowledge around the topic of the digital area. Hence, I put my trust in linustechtips and the community surrounding it to help me in a seemingly simple matter. I am looking for a decent laptop for work and that's the reason for my first post on this forum.

My requirements (I know, that a laptop is not made for this kind of workload but at the moment I cannot afford to buy both workstation and laptop):

  • Can easily run CAD applications like Inventor, SolidWorks, Siemens NX also when working on large assemblies
  • Decent render time of 3D objects
  • Decent compute time for finite element analysis
  • Handles photoshop and premiere (only small projects)
  • Not too gamery look since I need it also for meetings
  • Lightweight (ideally not more than 2kg) and portable as I carry it around a lot
  • not larger than 15.6" (for use in the train) and not smaller than 14"
  • Screen resolution of 1080p is ok, color accuracy would be preferable (I can live without it as long as I can work with an external monitor)
  • Good battery life (ideally >=4h under full load) which is probably unrealistic
  • Price around 2000 CHF (since I live in Switzerland), maximum 3000 CHF
  • If it can be combined with something like a razor core the requirements on rendering, fea, ps and pr can be dropped

So far, the best match I could find was the Dell XPS 15 with 32 gb of ram. However, the gtx1050 is probably rubbish when used for fea and while Inventor does support consumer grade graphic cards most other CAD programs do not. Otherwise, only professional grade hardware remains and that will blow my budget right now.

Does anyone has a recommendation for a device or combination, which meets my requirements?

Thank you for your help

Cella
