I currently have two Galaxy GTX 570 1GB running on SLI. Should I upgrade now or wait for next year's cards (i.e. Maxwell)? The vram is what is really bothering me, I end up receiving the annoying Windows low on memory prompter. I've been keeping an eye on the R9 290 (non-reference) and the GTX 780 but not sure whether I should get a R9 280x or a GTX 770 instead since I run @ 1080p. The monitor I currently run games on is the ASUS VG248QE. The most current games I'm playing now are BF4 and COD Ghosts.

Windows low memory message relates to RAM not V-RAM. Personally I'd wait to see what Maxwell brings to the table and how AMD responds (and Mantle of course).

dont think windows notifies you when your VRAM runs out, its the RAM that it warns you about,

No it wont warn you about VRAM... but I would say 1GB VRAM is not enough anymore for AAA 1920p gaming. you would be wanting 2GB minimum

(having two 1GB cards in SLI does not equal 2GB VRAM. the ram is mirrored in both cards)

Thought it was since I have 8GB and while monitoring in task manager, it caps at about 5GB.

Wait till Maxwell. I'm in the current that of being patient since I'll benefit from it more. Plus G-Sync will be more better by the time Maxwell is out on the market.

I expect the performance to theoretically be doubled by the time the next gen GPU's are out.

Wait til nVidia AND AMD make new moves. See what mantle can do, and weigh how much you even care about G-sync. Since you have cards already, waiting for maxwell won't be all that bad. Just be patient and weigh your options til you feel you have the best decision for you.
