Hi everyone,

Just a quick question about networking that im not 100% sure about.

I currently have all of my networking going through my router which is very old and limited to 10/100.

Would getting a 1gb switch fix my issue and make everything 1gb or will having my 10/100 router on the same switch bring it down to 10/100.

Just checking if i can go and get a cheep switch or have to go and get another router.

Your router being only 10/100 will limit any connections passing through it to 100Mb/s or less. If you throw a switch in line after the router, then connect everything to the switch, you'll have 10/100/1000 in between all devices, assuming all devices connected are capable of it. You'll still have 10/100 between the switch and router though.

Nope, you need a gigabit router too.

Why?

@OP It should work, though:

1. Your internet will be limited to 100Mb.

2. Anything going through that router will me 100Mb.

3. A router that old probably has security issues.

If we assume you connect the switch to the router, then everything else to the switch, all links on the local network will be gigabit (provided the end devices, cabling and any other connections between the device and switch are also gigabit). As long as the data does not need to leave the network and is not done over the router's WiFi connection, it will go through the switch and not the router, alleviating the 10/100 limit.

With the router being limited to 10/100 is no issue, my internet is only max 16mb down,

With the router however all of the models ive seen with 5+ 1gb connections are stupidly expensive.

Do you recommend getting a 1gb switch for my Lan connections and then keep the router i have as wifi and internet?

That would be the most cost effective solution, yes.

Hi everyone, Just a follow up on my situation,

I managed to get a 1gb switch and this has improved my file transfer speeds however im topping out at 30mbps.

My drive in my NAS is a 2TB WD Red so there shouldnt be a limiting factor, Right?

Please let me know if there is a way to check that everything is running properly

is that 30 Mb or MB?

A 1 Gbps switch will be seen in windows file transfers as 115MBps

what NAS is it, some are not rated for full 1Gbps speed, I had one that was rated for 80 MBps in the past.

30MB and i have transfered from one pc to another at the full speed without any issues, Just when writing to the NAS (Which is a DS216J)

However i do believe that this is the NAS's fault as the CPU Usage goes to 90+ whenever i go to try and read/write to the drive

looks like it is the NAS fault. if the CPU is hitting that high it is CPU bound on the NAS.
