Hej, so i was doing my stuff online when i started to look at the graphics cards, and i thought of mine. i looked it up on techpowerup, it said that the Gigabyte HD 7950 Windforce x3 OC FZ0 has two 6-pin connectors, but my card has one 6-pin connector and a 8-pin connector. is it possible that the person who used it before me flashed the cards bios from a HD 7970's to a Hd 7950's... I couldn't find any evidence of the card having a 6-pin and 8-pin connector. anywhere on two 6-pin connectors.
if anyone has the slightest clue of it being possible let me know.

@TheRandomness knows all the cards, he'll sort this out :P

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Aaah.. ok now I'm getting your point. Doesn't it say somewhere on the card?

and a lesser card would normally use lesser pin power connectors than its bigger brother

Techpowerup have gotten it wrong:

I know, I'm not sure that every HD 7950 uses two 6-pin connectors, but i can say that none of the Gigabyte ones don't have 8-pin connector on it.

No, that article has two 6-pin connectors.

PCIe Power

As with the reference design, the GIGABYTE HD7950 requires twin PCIe 6pin power cables which are capable of delivering 75W each. GIGABYTE recommend a 500W PSU as a minimum which should not be an issue for anybody owning a mid/high end gaming PC.

So here you can see that the back of the card has a metal plate to protect something, as the gigabyte HD 7950 doesn't have one.

So here you can see the back has a heatsink for something, ain't really that experty at this tech.

IMG_20170730_211515.jpg

Back of the card with the metal plate removed, it is much different than the HD 7950's

IMG_20170730_211701.jpg

under the heatsink under the main heatsink it had small chips. Don't ind the thermal pads pieces.

IMG_20170730_211711.jpg

Just looked up a Gigabye HD 7970 OC, found a Netherland used parts market. HD 7970 has the metal plate at the back of the card and one 6-pin and a 8-pin connector. Now either this is a modded AF Hd 7950 or a HD 7970 just flashed bios, because the evidence is quite massive.

Yeah that does appear to be a 7970 with a 7950 BIOS. Go ahead with the BIOS flash, and don't worry if you brick it, there's a way to get bricked cards back in the guide on some forums that I presume you'll be following.

Very interesting... why would anyone have flashed a lower bios tho?  There must have been a good reason for it, considering it would be worse in every way

TBH I'm not sure if that just checks the BIOS or if it can see through that to the true card, but given that it's been confirmed as a 7970, it would appear that it is just reading the BIOS and that switch didn't help.

Surely there should be a sticker or silk screening somewhere on the board that lists the exact SKU number?

You would think so but I'm not sure how common that is.  In fact I think it's fairly uncommon.

Wait, I see it in the photos.  Though it woulda been easier to read IF SOMEONE HAD TURNED OFF THE FREAKIN' CAMERA FLASH, HINT HINT.

GV-R795WF3-3GD Rev. 2.0

https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-R795WF3-3GD-rev10-20#ov

So it IS a 7950, not a 7970 flashed to be a 7950.
