I believe this might be your issue, not the RAM. Is your RAM near 100% when it lags? If yes then its most likely the RAM. If not it's the HHD

I rather believe that the lag comes from your HDD so upgrade to an SSD is your best move. I have an 5 year old laptop which lagged when loading a website with a lot of flash and video content. I put in an SSD and have now zero lags.

I agree for the most part.

4GB is generally not enough these days anyway though so a RAM upgrade would probably help in some/most situations.

Depending on your budget, how much space is used on your hard drive today, etc.

I would suggest the following in addition to the RAM upgrade:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/FrH48d/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz75e500bam

or

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/bh38TW/crucial-mx300-11tb-25-solid-state-drive-ct1050mx300ssd1

Edit:

Poking around you might need a 7mm to 9.5mm adapter kit as well but that shouldn't be more than $5

Additionally, it looks like the 4GB is maybe soldered onto the board? I can't tell on that since I'm getting conflicting information, so I would play it safe and pick up the single 8GB stick I mentioned and not the 2x8 kit.

Yikes.

You'll need the 1TB model then if you've only got 98GB of free space :(

If you have a lot of stuff on the laptop that you don't access often perhaps an external 2TB storage drive would be good and then you can go with a smaller SSD.

So does your C: drive only have 98GB of free space or the external drive?

Just want to make sure I recommend the best and cheapest options :)
