6th gen vs 7th gen

I'm planning to get a gaming laptop on the go. Does it matter which gen CPU I get? i5-7300hq or i5-6300hq

The only differences between 6th and 7th gen are as follows:

 

7th gen can achieve slightly higher clocks and/or better effiency.

7th gen iGPUs have hardware encoders that can handle 4K (6th gen can do it, but it software en/decode which is more resource intensive).

 

Look at the price of both. Determine if Netflix 4K is important, and if the price justifies the performance difference in your eyes. Look at reviews.

My laptop has the 6300HQ in it.  If you're worried about just gaming performance, I can tell you that you don't have much to worry about.


I'd say just get whatever is the cheaper option.  Minus GPU, of course.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

I believe they are going to be quite the same. Except if you get a 6th gen skylake, I would recommend undervolting that for way lower temperatures. Skylake mobile chips tend to undervolt very well.
