when one parts limits how well another preforms

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Example please?

trying to play 240fps csgo with a pentium from 2010 and a GTX 1080ti in SLI.

obviously, that is unbalanced and good luck getting >100fps.

another extreme would be a 7700k and a GT 210 for gaming.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

so like a ryzen 3 with a 1080ti for example ?

Bottlenecking is when one component of a machine (typically an electronic or motorized machine) relies on another component of the machine in order to do its work, and the other component can't keep up. This is because the component that can't keep up has significantly less power than the other, so it's at 100% usage, while the stronger component can't do much about that and remains at <70% usage or something like that.

By power I don't mean wattage, I mean horsepower, or performance.

that would be much less of a bottleneck, but it's still there

you can pair ryzen 3 with something along the lines of a RX 580/1060 6G and it won't be bottlenecked by a large chunk, as it is basically a haswell/skylake i5 with 2133MHz ram

this is ok;

low end cpus with low end gpus, or mid ranged gpus (but still on the low end)

example: i3 7100 with GTX 750ti, or a GTX 1050ti

mid ranged cpu with a low end/midranged GPU

example: i5 7500 with a GTX 750ti, or a 1050ti, or a 1060 6G

higher end mid ranged cpu with a higher end migranged GPU (or lower high end)

example: i5 7600/7600k with a GTX 1070/1080,

high end CPU with high end GPU

example: i7 7700k and a GTX 1080/1080ti.

these are all the good examples. if you have a higher end GPU with a lower end CPU, try to get a higher end CPU but don't downgrade to a lower end GPU.

if you have a higher end CPU, you can try to downgrade it to get a better GPU for better gaming performance, any 'higher end' CPU won't really bottleneck a lower end GPU

didn't write it out with AMD as im not good with their GPUs, ryzen 3 is a i5 basically, ryzen 5 is either a i7 or a i7 6 core, ryzen 7 is a 8 core i7w

if your CPU isnt strong enough the GPU will be sitting at not 100% usage

How do Reavers clean their spears?

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.

as the title suggests , my question is what is bottlenecking ?

Bottleneck literally refers to the top narrow part of a bottle. In engineering, it refers to a phenomenon where the performance or capacity of an entire system is limited by a single or small number of components or resources.

In layman's terms, it's using a component in a computer system that's far weaker or lower-end than the rest of the parts.

My main PC is CPU based, so my GPU is my bottleneck. I could run a 1080Ti in my PC without problems, but because I prefer to put money in other places I have a 1050Ti.
