Hello!

Has anyone here ever tried making a NAS based on Cubieboard 3? I am thinking about it, because I need a small NAS that would be an archive, not a media server. We can find there GbE and SATA II, so I think that some 3D-printed case and 2TB WD Red HDD would be perfect for me. :)

Looks like it's a single SATA port and you would need a separate power supply to power any 3.5" drives. This would be a fairly ineffective NAS device. Better to look into a cheap Atom motherboard.

Apparently it would power it but trying to run a NAS with a single 2.5" drive seems kind of pointless. It will have very little capacity. Building a NAS with this kind of board would indicate you're trying to do so on a budget and you best TB/$ rate is 3.5" drives.

i have yet to find one of these maker boards that is decent as a NAS. Most cannot compete with an external USB 2.5" drive

Just to be brave, you can try use an ARM board based on NXP i.MX 6 Quad. That thing have built-in SATA, gigabit Ethernet as well as PCIe port. I think you may be able to find one in mini-ITX form factor and throw in a hardware RAID card for faster and more reliable disk I/O.

Yeah, found some mini-ATX and going to buy i3-6100U with 4GB RAM. 4 drives 5 TB each, RAID 1+0. From a budget ARM-based I decided for high-end home build, RGB, 3D printed NAS. :) Linus likes that. :D

I would prefer a second hand server grapde based build for home NAS. Those parts can last despite being used, and can be very cheap too.
