...or headphones even.

So the story is that i've been using Razer Megalodon for 5 years or something, they've got somewhat old and started falling apart. After some googling i decided that HyperX Cloud II could be the thing i'm looking for - velour pads, 7.1, volume control...turned out to be crap, except may be for pads, they're nice. Sound balance is off to the right ear, volume control adjusts total volume level in the OS(just like keyboard controls would do) and the 7.1 is so virtual that windows detects Cloud II as "stereo headphones"(unlike Megalodon, configurable 5.1/7.1 "speakers"), so next week i'm going to return this...piece of hardware.

And now, experts, i need your help. Budget's kind of tight, 150$ - and the features i'm looking for are, as it seems, exotic. Yes, i need 7.1 for gaming to better orient myself and for better immersion in games like Elite; and it would be better to have some 7.1 to stereo conversion rather than "real surround" with multiple drivers per cup(so the Strix 7.1 is not really an option, even though that box with leds and stuff looks really cool). Yes, i don't like the feel and sound isolation of leather pads. No, the mic is not required.

Hope i haven't messed up anything here...

and hello ._.

No, you don't need 7.1 for gaming to better orient yourself. 7.1 headphones are all shit, virtual and non-virtual.

Just get nice stereo headphones, your brain will take care of the sound positioning way better than those 7.1 gimmicks.

From what i have experienced there's a noticeable difference and for me personally a 7.1 device does the trick. It's a matter of personal preference and habits.

"Nice"? How informative and helpful. VSS isn't a gimmick; it can sound much more three-dimensional and ambient/atmospheric than stereo, which depends a lot on the processor you use (Dolby Atmos, Dolby Headphone, Razer Surround, Sennheiser Binaural Rendering Engine, SBX Pro Studio, etc.), the headphones you use, and the game you play. This might not interplay well, at all.

If you want wired then you'd want the Logitech G633 for $98.00 on Amazon.

Well, I don't really like G633 design solutions, plastic construction looks both bulky and weak, the buttons on the left cup most probably make a loud plastic click making them not really usable(and really, macro keys on a headset, why?).

Wow, that's a huge list of what appears to be really good headphones, I'd roll with Philips or Superlux you've recommended, but it now depends on their availability in my country. All of them are stereo though, meaning i have to get a stand-alone processor, similar to Sennheiser GSX 1000 but cheaper, which has to be recognized by the OS as a 7.1 device, is there anything you could recommend?

I have used the Logitech G933 which is pretty much the same as the G633 but with a few added bonuses and one of them being it's wireless. I love the G933's and would recommend them. As for the G633 I'd assume they aren't that different.

Hmm, okay, thanks for that, i'll take a note and will try them out if possible.

Listen with the headphone in stereo first to see if the soundstage is big enough.

The consensus seems to be that CMSS-3D is best, with SBX being a close second.

Creative, huh, i remember Sound Blaster was a thing like 10 years ago, didn't know they're still a viable solution, if not an even better one.

Thanks for all the info, now i know what's considered cool and hot around and what to look for specifically. Cheers! [:

If you want good Audio quality, and good Performance for Gaming, you ironically need to get away from the term "gaming".

A 20€ Superlux 681 china headphone is already better soundquality than 90% of all gaming headsets below 150 bucks.

don't buy Logitech. Don't buy Steelseries. And please, don't buy Razer... I really didn't try most of them, but i tried an 80-90€ Kraken Pro. It was the biggest pile of Garbage i had on my head. Even a 25-30€ Creative Fatal1ty Pro was slightly clearer (and this is an extremely muddy headset.... FAR below a Superlux).

Listen to @Tacanacy there :)

Especially if you don't need a mic (which is the ONLY reason you should EVER consider buying a (gaming) Headset.  Everything else is much worse. Quality, sound, material quality, even positional audio to hear footsteps is MUCH worse.

Good headphone, Period. No Discussion there. Just find the one, that fits best for YOU and your Taste.

If you really NEED any surround sound simulation, there are tons of Software.

For Example, Razer Surround (As much garbage their headsets are, this software really is pretty decent, once configurated well). Or combine it with a Soundcard. Creative Soundblaster Z, SoundblasterX G5, Asus Strix Soar~.

They can do it even better, than this 99 cent USB-Soundcard shit, you find bundled with every 7.1 headset, that sounds even worse than any modern Realtek soundchip :P
