Linux on all the macs!

Thats the noise people make when trying to code something to work on linux bash bash bash xD Spending a few hours trying to use the command line in retropie so that it knows what raspberry pi I have was painful. :(

Going back to the original question, no. You could get rEFIT like mentioned earlier but as long as you don't  mind holding down the alt key when you want to change os'es you won't need it (Just after you have switched the mac on) Go into OS X, use disk utility and resize the partition to leave room for linux, put the bootable disk/USB in, hold down alt selected it and off you go. 

The only thing is that you wont be able to use the function keys and perhaps some of the things with the trackpad, like two finger click; as there are no boot camp drivers for linux for a 2006-2008 macbook, there might be though. 

I don't know how useful it will be to you but there is a website, http://en.uptodown.com/mac, you can download older versions of lots of programs, so chrome v38 for your G4 etc; I came across it when trying to find a version of chrome and opera for my core duo A1181.

Anyway I am not to sure if your G4 would support linux, because of the apple made CPU but I don't own a working one so I can't tell you yes or no.  Before you do any of that though make sure you have a time machine backup of your system so if anything goes wrong you have a backup.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

On the mac you need to download a program. I forgot the name it starts with an rf and it allows you to choose the OS at boot. What's wrong with MacOS though? Its BSD so it's basically linux

After having windows on my old A1181 macbook, I can tell you that its not worth the hassle, your better off with OS X. its just better then any others. Also Mac OS and Linux are both unix operation systems, so there basically the same. 

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Not really, if you're a C++ programmer you would have to install a modern version of GCC manually. I debut MacOS comes with anything more recent than GCC 4.2 (which released in 2009, and as such does not have any C++11 or C++14 or C++17 support.)

 

This is because Apple won't put any GPLv3 software in their OS.

Because PowerBooks can't go past 10.5 Leopard, and the 2006 MacBooks (wit Core 2 Duos) can't go past 10.7 Lion.

I want an up to date operating system and up to date browser.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

You do realize I'm keeping both OSes.  

Neither of these will be my main laptop.  I'm doing this all for fun.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

OS X doesn't have that much in common with Linux from an end user's perspective and it's not that similar from a developer's perspective either. It's an easy assumption to make and I've made it myself in the past, but Linux and OS X are very different. I should add that OS X is not just BSD either. Apple adds a lot of their own things that they don't contribute back to BSD.

Right, but they are both UNIX based so if you are used to things in the terminal on linux it isn't that hard to transition to MacOS

Thats the noise people make when trying to code something to work on linux bash bash bash xD Spending a few hours trying to use the command line in retropie so that it knows what raspberry pi I have was painful. :(

I don't know how useful it will be to you but there is a website, http://en.uptodown.com/mac, you can download older versions of lots of programs, so chrome v38 for your G4 etc; I came across it when trying to find a version of chrome and opera for my core duo A1181.

Anyway I am not to sure if your G4 would support linux, because of the apple made CPU but I don't own a working one so I can't tell you yes or no.  Before you do any of that though make sure you have a time machine backup of your system so if anything goes wrong you have a backup.

Hope it goes well.

macOS and Linux both use bash. If bash is difficult for you, fish is pretty good. BTW, if you don't remember a whole command, you can type the start of it and press tab twice to see what commands you can use and you can press the up and down arrow keys to go through previous commands you entered. Fish takes that to another level by adding auto suggestions for commands, tab completion of commands and syntax highlighting. Using the terminal is much, much nicer once you start working with fish or zsh.

After using the command line for a while, it can become more convenient than using the GUI...

Sometimes when WINE produces a zombie process that needs killing, I CTRL+ALT+t -> "ps aux | grep <programname>" -> "kill -9 <appID>" before even thinking about using the task manager equivalent...

Ubuntu and Debian work on PowerPC architecture, and the PowerPC CPUs Apple used wasn't made by them, they were made by Motorola and IBM.

I've been running Ubuntu on my 2008 4,1 macbook (intel processor) and it's been going alright. Only big issue I have is the wifi card since it use proprietary drivers that aren't too good (broadcom card). I would really double check what wifi card model you have an double check if there is a good open source driver available. Trackpad worked weird on some other distributions but it's good on ubuntu and I have more clicking options / control than what I had on snow leopard. Function keys work (except those that were linked to specific mac app like the exposé or dashboard, I didn't link them to the appropriate linux alternative yet).

 

I would suggest keeping it to a lightweight DE, unity 8 works but it can be a little sluggish from time to time on my macbook.

 

Also, you might have a look at macfanctld (ubuntu manual) (git page), it can be used to control fan speed on some macbook models if yours gets too hot.

 

Also using rEFInd to dual boot with osX snow leopard.

One thing I did forget to mention (it's been a while since I did that installation...), when you'll be done resizing your partitions and installing linux your mac osx disk utility tool might have issues. After I shrunk my osx partition with the linux utility I was no longer able to modify any of them in osx and the size preview all appeared messed up. This could become an issue if you decided to remove remove linux from the computer and make osx the only os on the machine (without having to do a complete system wipe).

Fair enough. But your probely still better off with OS X. 

It becomes an issue when installed programs stop receiving updates because they no longer support that version of the osx (like firefox, etc) and that you can't install many applications that require some new features that are only present on newer os that are not compatible with your machine. Not receiving security updates for both the os and the applications installed on the machine is a concern (for me at least). 

 

edit: In terms of os optimization, yes you are right that osx will perform better than linux on mac machines, no doubt it has been tuned to the machine.
