Im building my first pc and im debating whether i should overclock my cpu but i dont know if its worth it. Im planning on getting and i5 7500 (3.5 ghz) and gtx1080, but i feel like its gonna bottleneck. I could get a i5 7600k (3.8ghz) for $20 more ($60 including cooler and motherboard) and plan on overclocking to around 4.4 ghz. Is it worth it? Im also afraid overclocking will decrease life of my cpu

So in conclusion will 3.5 ghz be a lot different in terms of fps than 4.4ghz?

3.5 vs 4.4 is a bit of a difference. I would go with the K-series if the cost doesn't hurt you, but you should also invest in faster RAM even if it's only one step up for the same capacity.

Also I would go R5 1600, since you don't need to pay any premiums for it to be "unlocked" You'll get better performance, and more "future proofing" since the 6c/12t help with video editing.

When it comes to overclocking, moderate overclocks will shorten the lifespan, but the processor will live longer than you need, by a large margin. It's more likely that the mainboard or PSU will die. Just start out small, find some guides, and ask the forum if you need help, if you do decide to overclock.

Otherwise, I'd still get the K SKU for XMP and higher stock clocks, or look at Ryzen 5 as they're all unlocked and have 2 more cores.

Enough cores for the program and then clock speed until you gain nothing else.
