So i've just gotten a used 7970 to try and get working in my machine. upon loading up Premiere pro cs6, i find that it is not recognizing it in the gpu acceleration tab. i run gpu sniffer to see whats up, and it says that i dont have any devices that support gpu computation, even though i clearly do. what's up?

i just reinstalled the drivers with the clean install option. still no go. i've edited both the opencl and cuda files to have the 7970 in them. still nothing.

wiki says that it should already have it built into the hardware. is there a proper amd download for it?

My Old method (Pre-2017) but may still work,

Spoiler

I created a TXT file,...

"opencl_supported_cards.txt" and add the 'Generation Codenames"

cuda_supported_cards.txt already existed but AMD's didnt...

Open Notepad

Copy this below, paste inside notepad

Bonaire
Capeverde
Cayman
Devastator
Hawaii

Oland
Pitcairn
Tahiti
Turks
Spectre

Save AS

opencl_supported_cards.txt

Save to Desktop

Rightclick your AdobePremiere icon, open file location. It should open up (whatever years) eG C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014\

Paste in there where the main files are (Root Directory as its known)

If you run GPUSniffer in CMD mode (it wont disappear straight away) and will show the Codename you add Manually to that TXT file if need be in the Future. (I believe the HD7970 is Tahiti)

Try Premiere Pro, Enable Mercury OpenCL and Hopefully, without issues, it works.

*NOTE - I use this on older versions, my 2017 works as expected, and does not have those txt files anywhere in the root directory...but it may still work.

I didn't read the whole thread...(Sorry)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I didn't see that you replied to me. Sorry about that.

Is the 7970 the only GPU in the system? Have you tried to reinstall Premiere in case a file isn't present?

yes its the only one. i can try to reinstall, but everything works fine. if there was a missing or broken file, i'm fairly certain it would be much more noticeable.

i want to have my next pc to be threadripper based and use amd vega gpus. will i be forced to pay monthly to money grabbing adobe for its CC programs, or will vega work with old cs6 the way this 7970 isn't?
