Upgrading tips?

I'm looking to upgrade from my current z97 platform, consisting of a 4790k and and a  MSI Z97 gaming 5 motherboard. I have a 900$  CAD budget. any ideas?

what do you do? ryzen 1700 would be an "upgrade" depending on your task.

Depending on what you want, you could either go for Ryzen, or a 7700K.

 

Personally, I'd buy a Ryzen 5 1600 (or 1700 if you need cores for streaming or something), get a nice mobo, nice fast RAM, and pocket any extra change.

 

but you already have a really nice system. no need to upgrade.

Either Ryzen 1700 if you do stuff other than gaming, or don't upgrade the CPU and just get a new GPU.

7700k would be a sidegrade mostly

You probably don't need anything, maybe look for some better peripherals, or if you really need one, a new GPU?

Gaming is my primary focus, and from what i can recall, games like few but faster cores right?

That cpu is just fine for gaming, OC it if you want to squeeze some extra performance from the cpu side. It says here that you have a 1070 FTW, pick up a 1080 or 1080ti if you can find one in your budget that will help you waaay more than a cpu upgrade will for gaming.

Question : what resolution are you running? and maybe even consider getting a gsync monitor.
