Can you over voltage a fan?

can you over voltage a fan like for example you put a 12v fan conector to a 7v fan will it hurt the fan and if you put a 5v conecter into a 7 v fan will it still power it?

Yes overvolting (depending how much) a fan may lead to a firefighter fan with excellent pyrotechniks... As long as it melts.

 

Undervolting is always possible, but there needs to be a minimum voltage for the fan to spin up form stand still.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

@Technicolor you need to try. Undervolting won't damage it. Just like I said, fans need a minimum voltage to start turning around. If 5V is enough for your 7V fan to spin up, all is well.

you can do it, but it wont hold up to it for all that long if you do more then a few volts. it all depends on what the DC motor in the fan is rated for, might be rated for 12V usage and just run at 7V for longjevity/slower RPM

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

It starts spinning at 7v Dc, and outta meant to run up to 12v dc

The fan is build for 12 Volt use, it need 7 volts to start spinning. 

 

In the youtube video above you see the CPU Fan needs an amount of minimum voltage to start spinning. the 7 Volts on your fan are the minimum voltage for it to start spinning. If you are happy it will spin with 5 volts, but if 7 volts for spin up voltage is given, it may just lay like dead with only 5 volts.
