Best way to copy steam Library?

Bjfb5768

I have just purchased a new laptop for school, and I need to copy my steam library and the steam program files, there is no/very slow wifi at school so re-downloading is basically out of the picture, I have a 2TB external HDD, but it is saying that it is going to take several days to copy my 500GB steam library, I was wondering if anybody knows of a faster way to trasfer/copy my games onto my laptop preferably without having to spend money.

Many thanks for any help

if your pc's have gigabit ethernet just copy them directly to the target, its less of an hassle once you figure it out.

PC-to-PC cable could help, but you could also just let it copy overnight.  I find those estimates to be quite wrong a lot of the time.

Use the backup game files option in Steam, then transfer the game backup files to the external HDD, then use the restore backup function to 'restore' the games from the external onto the new laptop. This is how I got all my games on my desktop that doesn't have an internet connection outside of tethering my phone. Also when doing the backup it lets you chose how many volumes you want to break it up into and if you want to compress it, I never did and just backed it up as 1 volume at full size and it was still plenty fast.
