Hi all. So friend of mine has an aging PC (sorta) and wants to upgrade in the next couple months. All he does is play Smite, Black Desert Online, and Warframe but he would stream them provided he had the CPU to do so. Current specs are here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Y7gV8K

He already has a Gtx 980 and a good 1080p 144hz monitor with no plans/need to upgrade them right now. Here's what me/him came up with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Nw8VZ8

I can help him OC the 1700 to at least 3.7Ghz I hope, and the ram is his personal choice as well as the board. It will play games far better than his poor FX 8350 and theres enough CPU to stream and play any game he wants with 0 frame drops. Any suggestions?

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

You might want to consider adding an ssd in there. Considering his build doesn't have one yet that should be something you should do, otherwise looks good.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Sounds like a great upgrade.

consider the 1600 if he's not streaming a lot / creating content and wants to save a bit of money.

also I'd highly recommend an SSD, like @DocSwag said.

you also really don't need such an expensive motherboard. that money would be better spent on an AIO, or SSD, or just keep it.

I agree on the SSD, I will bring that up I can't believe to forgot about that. @RadiatingLight I already tried to get him to chill out on the board, he wanted a $280 ROG X370 board with wifi and crap but I got him down to $200 so that's already a miracle. He also has the H100i and he already has the mounting stuff he needs for AM4 as well so no need for that.

Looks good but I agree on checking out what you actually need out of the motherboard (how many usb ports do you need, will you ever fill that 3rd PCIe, or 2nd M.2?) they're good to have unless you never use them. Basically just find out what you actually need to plug into the board, and find one that works for you. You could probably save a good chunk of money and not lose anything out of your the build.

Oh you will have no issue getting to 3.7 ghz. I got to that with a vcore of 1.25V
