Fellow Techies,

Is it possible to have link aggregation from one nic to another? I was thinking either two or four gigabit ports per nic. Do I need a cpu better than a Pentium G3240? I remember the video Linus did and he had to have two i7's. Thoughts? This will go from my pc (Win 7 and 10) to my nas/file server (OMV) that I am building soon. Both will be within 10 feet from each other.

Thanks in advance.

What are you trying to do? If you want faster transfer speeds, you can't use link aggeration.

SMB 3 multichannel can do this(or a lots of work with nfs) but you need windows 8+ or server 2012 + and isn't supported in samba yet(well its beta) samba is what linux, freebsd, mac os x, and other oses uses to semd data with cifs to windows

Well then..... thanks for shooting down my hopes and dreams!

In all seriousness, thank you for setting it straight. Would a 10 gig card work with Win 7?

@dual290x Ugh... you can increase speeds with link aggregation. And no you dont need server os. If you get an intel nic you can do it in windows 7 via intel driver config. My whole network is 2gb link aggreg. Tplink sells a metal 8 port switch that can do teaming for $35ish bucks.

I can provide iperf screenshots if there are any skeptics.

Show iperf. For One client to one server to knew client it won't help. I've done it. It will help with multiple clients though.  I never said you need a server os and that was for smb3 not lacp.

@Electronics Wizardy I'm doing 1.84 gbps on iperf3, almost 2am...  Tomorrow then.

Its a common misconception that doing LACP between 2 rigs directly wont increase speeds. Linus should cover this. Infact linus used bonding over layer 4 to combine his internet in which packets were equally divided across all links.

there are various types of bonding, LACP is considered to be dynamic where the NICs configure themselves. Actually utilising both links at the same time is something not every system does on a single connection.

The best way to use more bandwidth with bonding is to use static. There are 2 types of static bonding that will use all the links for a single connection which is to use up one link fully before using another link or balancing traffic across all the links at the same time (splitting of packets and regrouping at the other end). both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Many network applications dont use single connections anymore. Browsers will initiate multiple connections for example.
