I have a question im sure has been asked before.  I was looking into building a Mini-itx computer.  I have an 3 old cyberpower PC running an intel i7 3630 at 2.4. I found a mother board but was wondering if i would be financially worth it to try make a good gaming PC using the i7. I could also resure the HD too. Let me know your thoughts as im new to building computers.  Thanks in advance.

If you're happy with the performance from your i7, just get an mITX mobo and case, and transfer everything over.

I5s aren't that good for the price, since Ryzen will give a twice the threads for cheaper. And the Biostar mITX board (only Ryzen one on the market right now) isn't that bad.

If you have the money, it's better to get into a newer platform. Ivys are getting old and rare now.

OP already has access to a mobo, ram and cpu.  This combo + a decent gpu will run games like a charm.

Kind of true, and AMD is a valid option, personally i would wait for the market after thread ripper drops and thing settle at Intel.

Yeah, if the OP doesn't need a new PC, waiting is the best choice, IMO.

You found an ITX board for that chip? I'd grab it while you can, iirc they're not that common.

That CPU will be fine for what you want to do. Just grab a nice cooler so you can OC it.

 

Though, I don't think that's the right CPU number. That's a mobile chip.

Gigabyte has an amazing board out (or very soon to be released). It's actually one of the better ITX boards from either side on the market.
