Best storage option for my needs

DekaRanger

Hello.

As the title states, I am wondering what is the best storage configuration for me. I was planning on getting on Crucial MX300 1Tb, Seagate Firecuda 2Tb and one Seagate Barracuda Pro 4Tb.

I will be gaming and doing different types of editing like photo and video. I want to have as much storage as possible but still be fast and reliable. The budget is 700 Usd.

Thank you in advance if I was unclear on anything.

Id just get one hdd, I don't see the point of the firecude here. Maybe get a 6 or 8tb if you want more space.

Then id get a external drive for backups.

Just took a look, and you can get a 10TB WD Gold (for enterprises)  for $443 US, so you might want to give that a shot.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

That almost equals 700$ in my country. I forgot electronics are cheaper in the us. Why did you go with a config like this? Just wondering for future purposes.

960 evo is second fastest consumer drive in world after 960 pro, with only slight performance difference
Firecuda is slower then ssd but faster then hdd, it's great if you play many AAA games, you can only install 7-8 games on 960 evo, if you will not play many game simultaneously, skip Firecuda
2 4tb  barracuda gives lot's of storage and option to do RAID

If you won't get FIrecuda, you can get 960 pro which is Crème de la crème but the performance incresse over 960 evo is not worth the 100$ increase which is not worth it IMO

For the hard drives,  my personal recommendation would be to get two 4TB Drives(NAS/PRO/Enterprise you're pick, just not the basic ones).

Set those up in Raid 1.

Then grab a 128GB SSD

and get PrimoCache to use it as a cache for the 4TB Storage.

Looks like a sweet setup. If you'd like to see a couple of charts to get an idea of how different drive types stack up performance-wise, and compare different combinations of them, then you might find this info useful:

The first one compares startup times across several popular games across a traditional spinning 7200 RPM HDD, FireCuda, and an M.2 SSD (128GB). The white is for SSD, the orange for FireCuda, and the grey for the 7200 spinning HDD.

Startup Times

The next one compares the first 3 days of gaming storage utilization across several popular titles, and SYSmark ratings from various drive types and combinations. First of the grays is 7200 RPM 1TB spinning HDD, second (lightest gray) is FireCuda, third (darkest gray) is an SSD + 7200 RPM HDD combo, purple is SSD + FireCuda combo, and lastly, blue is SSD.

First 3 Days Gaming Storage Utilization

Thank you for considering Seagate regardless of which drive you decide is best for your needs in the end!
