I recently bought an intel core i7 - 7700 @ 3.6Ghz with 8M cache and a max turbo speed of 4.2Ghz thinking its best/cheapest cpu to run CAD and games but still not sure. I've done research on this before I decided to get it but I feel like I need a second opinion. Is this one ok or should I go with a cheaper one with less speed and cores? Ohh...and is hyperthreading necessary for CAD? I have time to return it so any advice will be really helpful.

the 7700 is one of the best chips out there for this use.

ryzen 1600 would be a better bet, especially if you can OC, try to get some good ram, ryzen benefits from ram speed.

Thing is the i7 will be better though, the ryzen is only cheaper here.

not a single person i know who uses CAD only has one program open at a time, threads will he helpful when doing multiple tasks.

The i7 7700 is enough and an excellent choice, it really is better than the r5 1600 by all means, however the r7 1700 would've been a strong competitor, let me put this way if you limit your multi-tasking the i7 will outperform the Ryzen 7 for sure however like stated above and true from what I know from my brother who uses CAD the multi-tasking on a ryzen 7 chip is greatly appreciated.

Moral of the story just keep the i7 as getting the Ryzen 5 would be rather a downgrade and getting a Ryzen 7 would end up giving you unnecessary costs.

so an i5 series cpu probably wouldn't cut it?

Dear god i5's are obsolete, if you're actually considering to buy an i5 instead of the i7 7700 then Ryzen 5 1600 aaaaaallllll the way.

HT/SMT doesn't contribute much to Autodesk. For Autodesk, frequency, IPC, and core count are your main priorities. An i5 and i7 at the same clock and gen pull the same amount of speed until you render the project.

[Edit:] Since you purchased the 7700, I'd just stick with it since it will do a hell of a lot better over something like a Ryzen hexa-core. If you're thinking of upgrading, go for a Ryzen octa-core and overclock it as close as you can to 4.0GHz.

well in that case i'll keep it then. I appreciate the input. just glad I made the right choice.

You'd be downgrading if you chose an R5-1600, if anything due to cost and down-time.

Oh, if you already own it, then just got with it. That CPU is very good for it.

Yeah, depending on the program, some Autodesk programs aren't very multithreaded to use more than 10 cores (At least for Revit) if I remember right (aside from rendering). For example, blueprinting in Revit is faster on my 2700K (4.9 GHz OC) than my Xeon Server E5-2695V3 (14 core, 28 thread, 2.2 GHz). It also doesn't use hyperthreading so well as mentioned above.
