I'm sure this conversation has happened before. I tried to search for it, but I failed, so here goes:

From a practical point of view in everyday application, is there any perceptible value in spending the premium for lower CL memory?

Example: Let's say we have CL16 vs CL14 DDR4 memory, both running at the same speed, but the CL14 memory comes with a 25% price increase. Is the value there?

So we've come full circle and are back where we were in IDE days, only now it's SATA? Is that why NVME drives are such a huge thing now?

exactly, nvme, 10gb networks and pcie v4.0 are examples of tech that will actually improve the computer experience.

i almost forgot, one other big one:software

software has been lagging behind for too long, there are reasons for it (one being that its hard work) though.

Every time I start to catch up with technology (I just started using SATA3 and SSDs two years ago, and I'm just now moving up to a 1Gb network card, not that it matters since everything else on the network is still 100Mb), it becomes outdated. At least it's affordable.
