Hello,

I'm currently planning on building an x299 build based on the i9 7900x. From what I have seen, this may not be the best choice for a build that is designed to be overkill. Where I am having trouble is deciding between the 7820x and the 7900x. I saw Linus' video on the 7900x and wasn't exactly blown away by the performance of the 7900x, but it does look like a nice chip with a lot of on demand power. I am coming from a 3930k (6 core) and definitely don't want to go to fewer cores, as this rig has served me quite well. I don't need this level of power often, but it occasionally comes in handy.

Current specs (built in 2011):

3930k @ 4.2ghz

corsair 16gb ddr3 1600mhz ram

asus rampage iv extreme

evga gtx 680 signature oc

corsair ax1200 psu

dual corsair 120gb ssds in raid 0

1tb storage drive

corsair obsidian 800d

New system:

i9 7900x (7820x?)

gskill 64gb ddr4 3200 cas14

asus rampage vi extreme

dual asus strix gtx 1080tis sli w/ asus hb bridge

dual samsung 960 pro 1tb nvmes raid 0

(not sure what other storage options I'll need)

ek predator 360 cooler

corsair ax1200 psu

corsair crystal 570x

I am dying to game in 4k at as many hz as possible. I will be getting a (most likely asus) 4k 144hz hdr display as soon as they're available. I understand that all this is pricey, but gaming and my mustang are my two major hobbies. My main worries are the pcie lanes (this is the most aggravating thing Intel has done in a long time). I don't want my graphics cards to be hindered at all (especially if volta is a large leap) and I don't want my raided nvmes to be hurting for pcie bandwidth either.

You don't need a CPU upgrade for this.

Actually, Extreme Sandy Bridge CPUs such as yours had plenty of OC headroom and very good single thread performance to boot, even compared to later Extreme CPUs. You really don't need that for your 4K needs. You would definitely need a GPU upgrade though. You'd probably be fine even for 1080p 144hz with your current CPU which is a more realistic framerate.

I lost my ssd raid a few weeks ago and have been holding off rebuilding everything because I want to go to an nvme raid, this is where I expect to see most of my performance gain. In order to get multiple m.2 slots, I need a new motherboard and then we get into just upgrading the whole thing. I currently don't have any pcie slots to spare to add an add-in card. I would be taking advantage of the asus dimm.2 slot.

I don't have any interest in 1080p gaming, that's less than I'm running at now, haha.

true, this comes plus the fact that the X79 chipset does not support NVMe. :(

What do you need NVME RAID for? Do you have a lot of workloads that requires really fast sequential read/write? Otherwise, it is useless compared to SATA 3 SSDs.

new games are all 4+Threads so his current i7 is totally awesome tbh. I'd suggest getting one 1080 ti for now and  then you can decide whether SLI is going to be bottlenecked or not and still upgrade CPU+mobo+RAM down the road

1080p 144hz was merely a symbolic example of what would tax your CPU more to the point where you'd need more juice. 4K is a GPU issue, not a CPU issue.

or you get a PCIe to m.2 expension card and run a single m.2 ssd from that. I dont see the usefulness in RAID 0. Drives are already so fast anyways

You obviously need at least Extreme performance (X-series) chip, none of that unlocked performance (K-series) bullshit you have now, and with 3x8 triple (wtf is 3x8 triple?? is that 9x8 or 3x24?? or both? 9x24???) or 4x8 quad graphics cards on X-series, MINIMUM !!!!

I have them in my razer blade pro and love it. Load times are over-rated, I am bringing my desktop up to speed.

any SATA III SSD is going to make OS and games smooth honestly.

While I appreciate your feedback, I'm pretty set on doing the raid0 nvmes and advice on that was not the point of this post. I am simply looking for guidance on whether or not the 28pcie lanes of the 7820x are "good enough" or if I should just spend the extra $400 and get the full 44.

I just personally would never run RAID 0 especially with such fast drives

I would advise against a CPU upgrade as resolution directly affects GPU performance. You're unlikely to have a GPU that can handle 2160@144Hz anytime soon and if you're going with two 3.0x8 GPU's for SLI, you're wasting money.
