Platform swap (X99/Z270)

Hello all,

 

Figured I would come to the forums largely because I am torn about potentially swapping out the X99/5820K in my main rig for the Z270/7700k in my secondary rig.  In a nut shell, I was considering selling off my X99 gear and moving over to the Kaby Lake gear that I have sitting idle next to me as I type this.  You might ask why, well I was considering an upgrade into X299, but with the recent information that has been released about X299 I decided its best to take a wait and see approach and see how the X299 shakes out and what AMD has once threadripper launches.  Now, with that said, I do mostly gaming on my main rig these days and haven't done any streaming or autocad type work in quite some time at home, so I could justify losing the two (2) extra cores and gain the single threaded performance that the 7700K would provide.  For whatever its work (when looking at potential PCI lane issues) I will be adding another EVO 500gb drive (would put 5 SSD's and 2 spin drives in the system) plus a couple of PRO 850 NVME drives into the system.  I think the decision would be to move over to the 7700K, but like I said, I figured I would throw the question to the masses.

I don't know why you have both but if you game more the 7700K would be better but now that 4+ cores is becoming really cheap and everywhere on each team I think devs will soon move to utilizing more cores so the 5820K might perform better down the road.

The x99/5820k I have had since launch.  I have the second system because I was using the 7700K on my 100" projector setup in another room in my house, but I found that I wasn't actually using the system much.  With that, I moved it to where my X99 system is and have largely been using it to bench graphics cards and such.  Just was thinking out loud, that it might make sense to sell off the X99 gear and use the Z270 and then see where everything stands in a few months.  I can always go out and buy a 10+ core setup from either team so that is not really an issue.  However, if the performance isn't there, then its not worth it this generation and I shall wait.

The only thing I see that could be a problem is if you use many PCI SSDs. The 5820 has 28 lanes and the 7700k has 16. 2 4x PCI SSDs will leave you with 8 PCIE lanes on the 7700k for graphics. Meaning no SLI or dual at 4x each GPU for workstation applications(i'm not even sure that will work). The 5820k can handle more then that no sweat. just make sure you leave 8 PCI lanes per GPU if you want optimal performance for sure

Not sure what you mean by 850 pro NVMe, since the 850 pro isn't NVMe.

 

If you're consider an NVMe drive, it's not worth it. NVMe doesn't improve boot or app launch times over sata drives, it's only useful for prosumers.

You corrected me yet again.  It is a 950 Pro.  I just looked at it again.  My eyes must be going on me because I certainly thought it was an 8.  You can't pass up 950 pros when they are 60 bucks a pop on Hardforum.  At least in my mind you can't.  I have a few normal 2.5" evos in the rig right now.

Your right, z270 does have PCI lanes on chipset dedicated to non graphics traffic. I knew x99 had PCI lanes(only 8). Sorry for misleading information. I need to dig into the 270 a little more.

Here's a thread dedicated to the topic.  It's for Skylake and Haswell-E specifically, but the only difference is that z270/Kaby Lake has 4 more chipset PCIe lanes then z170/Skylake.  Good luck.

Whats funny is I just remembered reading an article or something the other day about using kabby lake i7s on z170s and I remember it saying you'd lose the extra PCI lanes 270 adds.

Actually, x99 PCIe lanes are 8 x 2.0 instead of 3.0 :(
