Looking to upgrade my rig and need advice

Kazuto

Hello guys,

I want to upgrade my rig.

What I'm currently using:

  • i5-3750K with an Megahalems cooler
  • ASRock Z77 Performance
  • 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance
  • EVGA GTX 760
  • Samsung HD321KJ SpinPoint 7200RPM HDD (as OS drive)

And this is what I want to upgrade to:

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/KazutoDE/saved/xqQMpg

Are these parts good in this configuration or would you change something?

Gaming and work. I'm a digital artist and content-creator/streamer.

I don't know if the threads will make a difference in encoding to twitch.

You should also consider the Ryzen 7 series. It many not provide the best frame rates when compared to the 7700k, but it will offer a much better value for the money that you will spend.

You will get 8 cores and 16 threads vs 4 cores 8 threads.

Also, you can save some money, buy the 1700, and then overclock it to get the performance of the 1700x or the 1800x

Haven't considered the Ryzen 7 series. I will look into that, maybe there are some encoding benchmarks out there :D

hybrid cards aren't really worth it, save the money and get a nice air cooled one

Unless your current RAM isn't DDR4, I don't see the point in spending $150 on nicer looking ram in the same capacity. (Unless you don't care about money and just want it to look nice through a case window) Like YBPT said, go for the i5-7600K instead of the more expensive i7. Aside from that, looks good.

My current RAM is DDR3. Z77 doesn't support DDR4 as far as I know.

I will look at some benchmarks comparing the R7-1700 against the i5-7600K ^^

Ok, makes sense. A cheaper option would be 16GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-2800. Virtually no difference between that and DDR4-3000. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/HwzZxr/corsair-memory-cmk16gx4m2a2800c16

No need to upgrade motherboard or RAM. LGA1155 is still perfectly capable. You could grab a used i7-3770k(or even 2600k) and have similar performance to current gen i7's anyway.

What is your current case and PSU? Also, what monitor(s) will you be using with this system?

I don't need to upgrade PSU or case. PSU is EVGA 1300W 80+ Gold (I know it's overkill) and case is BitFenix Shinobi XL.

3770k seems not to be a huge upgrade

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-3770K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3570K/1317vs1316

And i7-7700K seems to be quite more powerful than the 3770K.

If the 3770k isn't "a huge upgrade" over the 3570k, then the 7700k isn't "a huge upgrade" from the 7600k. Neither a current gen i5 nor i7 makes sense, it would be wasted money.

Again, what monitor(s) are you using?

I'm using two Samsung SyncMaster 2494.

Sure aren't they huge upgrades but paying ~200$ for 3% increase in performance as a 3770K is more wasted than ~300$ for 30% increase in performance.
So 7700K is money wiser spend than 3770K.

Except that the 3770k isn't a 3% increase over the 3570k, and the 7700k isn't a 30% increase. Also, the 7700k isn't a $300 upgrade, it's a $760 upgrade in this case. Whereas you could grab a used i7-2600k/3770k, use it in your current motherboard with your current cooler and RAM, OC it and have very similar performance to a 6700k/7700k for the most part. Then use the rest of your money on better stuff elsewhere, or just save it.

Okay, well a GTX 1080 doesn't make sense for two low end 1080p 60Hz monitors.

Otherwise, if you MUST get a new CPU;

GTX 1080 instead of 1080Ti, 60Hz 1440p instead of 165Hz. You also sacrifice G-Sync.

I'd rather get a new board with M.2 so that I can use a Samsung 960 EVO 256GB which has up to seven times the read speed and four times the write speed than a SATA SDD. I don't need much storage for apps, so 250GB is more than sufficent. I'm using a 320GB HDD as OS and Apps drive and still have 200GB left, so a 250GB SSD would only be used by up to approx. 50%. I've got a 2TB and 1TB drive for everything else such as games and media. I prefer speed over storage, since it's used for Adobe cloud and such.

And looking at Passmark benchmarks the i7-7700K is clearly superior to the 3570K or 3770K.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2874&cmp[]=2&cmp[]=828

And if I consider an upgrade to a R7 I can also consider an upgrade to an i7-7700K because both would mean getting a new mainboard.

And both are priced almost the same.

RAM can be swapped. I've never understood the huge difference in clock times anyway xD

And I don't see why I would need new displays other than the ports. I'm happy with 1080p60Hz.

This is the last thing I would upgrade and only if one breaks.

And 1080Ti is not worth almost double the price in my case since I don't plan on playing at 4K.

If you do content creation and streaming the 1700 should be the better choice by popular opinion. Admittedly I didn't bother looking up streaming and content creation benchmarks

Okay :) 1700 seems to be stronger by approx. 10%, at least after CPU Mark score.
