short term thermal paste alternatives

i have a salvaged dell optiplex 740 set up and i need to do something to it before i can set it up for some game testing but i don't have any thermal paste right now, i heard tooth paste was a good alterative but i think there might be just as good or better alliteratives i can find or make at home. i won't be using it long though, probably a day at most so i fix the issue at hand so i can set it up for the testing.

once i have the problem i need to solve taken care of i will buy some decent thermal paste and use the following games to test this poor old thing to see if it fairs better than the E1-1200 @1.4GHz i normally use to play my games. i know the 6000+ is a 65nm CPU running up against a 32nm CPU but the clock speed difference is significant, 1.4 GHz(E1-1200) vs 3.1 GHz(Athlon 64 x2 6000+) and i defffinatly don't exect these to be 60+ FPS such an old CPU especially the newer/more demanding games on this list. one last thing, this list may change before the tests are started or completed.

-ARMA III and II(both if possible)

-DayZ SA

-Minecraft(latest comparable version)(removed from testing que due to its ability to bring an CPU to its knees)

-Garry's Mod

-PayDay 2

-TF2(cant use for testing due to insufficient drive space)

-TABZ

-Rust(may be removed from testing que due to insufficient drive space)

-H&G(heros and generals)(cant use for testing due to insufficient drive space)

-Unturned(latest available version)(may be removed from testing que due to insufficient drive space)

i have a 640GB drive but its copy of windows is ruined and if i am to use it i need to get an external drive bay to clone my 250GB driver to it so i can use way more games for the testing

Yes, toothpaste will work until it dries, which will happen quickly. Unless you want to fry your CPU, just wait till you get proper thermal paste.

Is there a reason you can't wait to do this "thing" until you get the real thermal compound? I don't know how effective toothpaste is at conducting heat, but I would definitely avoid putting it on my CPU if at all possible.

I'm just going to tell you now that that Dell won't get you very far for gaming. Do you even have a GPU? Those OptiPlex 740's in particular are my least favorite, as they never worked right for me.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Don't use "thermal paste alternatives" unless you can afford to lose the rig. It's better to wait and have a working rig at the end of the day rather than having a working rig for a few hours until it bites the dust and you're left with a paperweight.

well it will shut off before it dies, you can use other stuff and it will work. yes you should only do it to see if it works or for fun.

id say OP if you want to use an alternative id use some type of cream or something idk google it, but only use it to see if the pc turns on, dont use it to actually play on the computer.

so if you know it works just wait, its not worth it to play on it for 3 hours and then have the pc shut off from overheating and have to put more stuff on the cpu and repeat.

i just need something that will last long enough, like a few hours, so i can fix any issues it has so i don't have to deal wit them when i am supposed to be downloading to the old 250 GB HDD, and I'm sure i DO NOT have the room to have more than 1 or 2 games steam and windows 7 all at the same time, i will probably have thermal paste in a couple of days but in order to fix the issues i have to do to it now or i will have to wait more than 2-3 days just so i can evan do anything to it due to the fact that i don't own a keyboard or monitor that i can use with it and i got the chance to work on it today and tomorrow and maybe the day after that to use borrowed equipment to fix any problem it has so that when i do get a monitor, keyboard and decent thermal paste i will test the old thing and see how it will handle what i throw at it, also its fine if the alternatives only last an hour or so because I'm not going to do any sort of stability or stress test to it without decent thermal paste instead of tooth paste, also its fine if the alternative doesn't last long, as log as it will last log enough for me to get past the biggest problem with this project of mine i should be able to take care of the rest when i do have decent thermal paste available.

If you're not going to expose the processor to heavy loads and you are going to get some proper compound in a bit, you can just run without thermal paste.

All thermal paste is really supposed to do is fill in the imperfections between the heat spreader and heat sink. I'm willing wager this doesn't really account for a lot of surface contact.

i somehow got it to quit shutting down just by adding a dot of hand soap to the top of the IHS of my CPU, all i need to do now is figure out how to get past the lock screen of Windows 7 Enterprise without a password :|

edit1: i wont beable to run tests till i get my hands on a install disc for windows 7 or 10 or get a different drive with windows on it already becuase i have no way to get past the lock on the salvaged 740's copy of windows, if you know where to get a pre-formatted drive with windows already installed that isnt vary expesive im in need of one.

edit2: i might have found a way or two to replace the already installed copy of windows on the 740's 250GB hard drive, i can either clone the 250GB drive from my laptop or i can try using an ISO of windows 10 on a USB stick to write over the existing data. i also have a 640GB drive but it may have something i dont want to write over with and the only thing wrong with it is a dead copy of windows 7
