Alright: my son has en an Old AF system and the motherboards power delivery is dying (i belive)

MB: ASUS Striker 2 NSE (LGA 775)

CPU: Q9550

PSU: CX650M (New)
GPU: ASUS GTX 760 OC
Ram: 8GB ddr3 1333Mhz. (4x 2GB)

Computers symptoms:

Sometimes it "black screens" when powering on, Rebooting or Existing BIOS..
and sometimes its doing the same while playing games or watching Youtube..

Everything has ben tried this setup has ben rebuild times and times again.. only CPU and MB has not ben changed..

This system is able to play ARK (fair) so it is mainly stability he needs and its more likely that it is the MB that dies before the CPU
(has never ben over volted as far as i know)

my problem is that i cant get a new 775 Board and i don´t trust the overpriced older used ones..
and i´m not gona buy NEW i5 + MB + DDR4 combo when all he needs is stability..

My suggestion is something like buying:  an used 3. gen i5 an a new motherboard, and then using his own 8gb ddr3 (4x 2gb 1333Mhz)..

Am i way off ? and what do i get ? i need to finde a cpu that uses an socket that is still in production and will work with ddr3 1333Mhz

Thanks Friends
PS: i´m from Denmark and hardware is about 50% more expensive her then in the US.

h81 and xeon e3 1231v3

its i7 4770 without the fancy name and at $100 less

And i thought i was a geek ;-) i understand the Xeon part but i´d like consumer products.. don´t want fxxk around with server boards and so on..

BTW: his Case is an Cooler Master HAF XB with 3x 120mm + 1x 200mm + 2x 80mm fans on high speed so i doubt it is an heat issue..

Mid-end Haswell maybe. My i5 4460 is one of them. In fact, i5 4430, 4440, 4460 are all reasonably priced. Match it with h81 mobo and reuse the rest of the parts.

EDIT: Those that carry "S" suffix are fine. Slightly slower, but are still faster than a Q9550. Other suffix like "T", "K" are best avoided in your situation

E3 1231 v3 is one of the best, but if you don't need extra performance Haswell i5s are fine.

you don't have to use any server components, the xeon works just fine with a regular consumer lga 1150 mobo and the xeon will work just like an i7.

But i got another system with 2x 4gb + 2x 2gb.. if i take those out and throw his 8gb i that one and the 2x 4gb in his.. than 2 dimms will suffice.. both are 1080p gaming rigs.. so 8gb is barely enough..

Yeah, my LGA 775 probably will enjoy decent workloads in chrome using Eight Gigabytes of RAM

If you go used you can get a much better board for the money. My EVGA Z97 Classified was 100 USD.

why ? as i recall yous is Unlocked with no hyperthreading

mine is 3.5Ghz with Hyperthreading like an i3 and for alot less money, the hyperthrading gives me a more smooth gaming experience (FPS is not the only thing that counts)

and the main use for my system is streaming + internet browsing + casual 1080p gaming (gtx1050 fanless)

and then my cpu uses A LOT LESS power than yours running 4-5Ghz 24-7-365
