doesnt seem needed in any way, maybe check the manual and see what it says about that

Yeah, since the m.2 port is vertical (at a 90 degree angle to the motherboard) this will let you fix your m.2 drives.

 

Usually, motherboards will have them parallel to the board, but my guess is Asus was a bit cramped for space
