Pc shutting off while gaming.

Hello.   Got an issue here.   My temps are wayyyy under check.  All main components are running water cooling.       Cpu is running 3.6  and its the ryzen 1700.         Its a overclock at stock settings and before it was working PERFECTLY.

Just got a bios update and got my flare x series ram sticks to run at 3200 (rated) speeds.   Before it was running at 2667 mhz.          Anytime i play a game.  it runs.   I play.    BAMN.  display shuts off but not the computer.     My audio goes out.     No blue screen.  It just shuts off.  But the fans keeps running.     Its really odd. What could be the problem? The mobo is the msi sli plus x370, Powersupply is evga 650 g3 powersupply.       Gpu is gtx 1080 ti hybrid series.

Ok i dont know whats up with the formatting with all the random spaces and stuff...

As for the issue, if it's not temperature related, my next guess would be CPU instability (only applies if overclocked). If it's not overclocked, could be a RAM or GPU issue

Most likely the PSU.  If that lets the voltage fluctuate too much, you get sudden shutdowns like that.  Try running the PC with a borrowed PSU (or one from another of your computers if you have more) for a while, see if that helps.

Right and i get that but the thing is this power supply is plenty for all my components.     Not only that but it was working before for weeks.  Maybe not at the overclocked settings but stock yes.

Clear CMOS to restore to everything default settings, and see if any instability still occurs.

Yes its overclocked.      3.0 - 3.6.        It only started shutting off after i got my ram running at its rated speeds.

T r y with your old     ram or underclock  your  new    ram  to the    2667   speed and

see  if  that  fix es it. If it's ram,            you can do some mem            tests too, to   verify.

Ill do that but it all points towards ram i mean it was not doing this before on my previous ram sticks.    thing is these are compatible with my motherboard.  The other set were not.

I fixed it.    Idk why but running my gpu with TWO separate cables that come off the powersupply works.        I guess a single rail is not enough?   anyways all is good.

It has something to with the gpu.   After i supplied the vga with two different rails it ended up running longer.                                  but the temps are at 34 c and 40 at load.      Cant be the temps.         Vrms are cool too.              Top pcie slot.

Interesting discovery!!!   When this black screen stuff happens.  If i unplug  the display port cable and hook it back up.   It works again and the game is no longer running but this is something right?

I had this EXACT issue. Like literally this exactly. I ran the registry repair on CCleaner and I haven't had that issue since. Try that.

Have you tried a new cable to make sure it's not that?

Honestly this sounds like a PSU issue, especially since you seem to see a difference with the PSU cables. I agree that 650watt should be enough but it is close to the edge depending on the other hardware you have (additional HDD/SSDs, fans, pumps, etc) and you might be going over. The 1080Ti can use 280+watts on it's own (more if OCed). It could also just be a bad PSU. Either way if you have access to another one then try that out and/or use a meter to check what your peak power draw is.

I assume you have the 1080Ti at stock right? If not then that's the first thing to do, reset the GPU to stock speeds and try again. Have you checked if there are any Mobo BIOS updates? You can try to flash the bios in case that's a bug from an old BIOS version.

Have you tried the basics? Run DDU and reinstall your drivers, run a registry cleaner (like CCleaner), run memtest86 or windows memory diagnostic (the extended version), etc

Really just go through one component at a time (try a different PSU, different GPU, etc) until you narrow it down.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Spoiler

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

trying other components wont be an option atm.   I live in a very out there area.   people around here dont know anything about computers.  No pc shops for miles.       ugh....thing is this was working for weeks with NO issues.....right after i updated to the newest beta bios.....i started getting issues and this new ram thats in here too.....flare x 3200...

As others have stated, it is likely the PSU not being powerful/stable enough. Buddy had a 650w and he would play with his 1080ti he just got and have issues with the screen going black, especially if he used the OC mode on the card. He picked up a 750w PSU and had no issues since.

i5 6600k @ 4.4ghz on Hyper 212 Evo

Powercolor RX 480 8Gb Red Devil @1330Mhz

Bottom line:  Don't be a spaz or an 800lb gorilla when installing your expensive CPU, and you won't have any problems. --Phate.exe

If the voltage is fluctuating on the 12V rail that fed the GPU before, that can be enough to shut the PC down or crash the graphics card.  By using 2 rails you probably made it happen less often because the bad rail isn't stressed as hard and hence the fluctuations are smaller.

Try putting the card entirely on the other 12V rail.
