R9 280x XFX Artifacts

Hello last year I bought a XFX R9 280x Double D from Amazon, a couple days after building my newly built gaming pc an i5 4590, 8GB of Crucial ballistic ram, 750w Corsair power supply, ASRock Fatalty z97 killer mother board, 1TB Segate HDD I started to notice that in games I would start to get graphic artifacts textures stretching, pixels that would flicker etc games were unplayable once they started happening. Then after I would exit the game hoping the graphic artifacts would stop I would go and watch youtube videos, I would get lines in the youtube videos as well as just browsing the internet I would get lines across the browser flickering from time to time. I did some research and found out that the core clock speed and the memory clock speed is to high and people recommend to down clock both the core and memory speeds just a little bit. After doing so it fixed it for about a day and started back up again. I called XFX and soon got a RMA after putting the new GPU in and played around in some games and got more graphic problems the problem seemed like it never stopped. I've went about a week or so without having problems and then it continued some days would be better than others. The pictures below make me confused because during idle or even just at the desktop the memory clock would go from 150 MHz to 1500 the core clock would go from 300 MHz and jump up to 850 MHz randomly without having anything on my desktop or without doing anything other than having MSI afterburner open I put some pictures of the hardware monitors could anyone help me with this I also called XFX for the third time and even without having my Warranty active they are still going to RMA the card sadly I feel like this will not help me or fix the problem because RMAing the card once didn't help they sent me two bad cars so what are your guys idea on what should I do? Thank you

It might have something to do with the fact that the 280x is rather old.

Even my friend with a r9 270 from msi runs every game on ultra just fine even if its pushing 100% 24/7

The card is likely just developed a hardware fault.  It's unlikely that anyone can help you here.  The answer is to RMA it.

The small sudden spikes up in GPU and Memory frequency is normal.

The GPU (PC in general) does a bit of processing in the background...even when idling.

It would be something to be cautious about if the GPU and Memory is running at full speed CONSTANTLY while idle.

 

I see that your GPU fans are running at 100%.

Your R9-280X is not overheating...sitting at ~34*C in your screenshots.

Did you do that intentionally?

 

Are you able to collect some data for the artifacts appear (e.g under load)?

What are your temperatures, GPU and Memory frequencies while gaming?

Is GPU-Z able to read VRM temperatures?

Okay so I did a run test of Dirty bomb the game that I have been playing often this week I hooked up a second monitor so I can look at after burner to see if once I started getting artifacts if the memory or the clock speeds would change but once I started getting artifacts the clocks speeds kept the same, yes I did intentionally do that to my fan speeds to keep the fans speed at 100% to keep the gpu cooler at all times.  The dips in the core clock and memory clock for a short period of time is due to me tabbing out of the game to change music but I got artifacts the max temperature of the gpu was 70 C that is really hot it shouldn't be getting that hot.

Everything is kept as default clock speeds other than the fan speed %

Ah okay...I was expecting artifacts more like this...

If you get something like this, then it would point more towards a defective / dying card.

70*C isn't exactly hot for a graphics card...but mixed feeling when the fan speed is at 100%.

That said, the 'Thermal Ghost' cooler XFX used on the HD 7900 and R9-200 series wasn't the best performing cooling solution.

 

Some things you can try:

  • Try updating to a newer driver (e.g.  newest available should be version 17.6.2 -- June 13 2017)
  • Drop the GPU and/or Memory frequency down to see if the problem is related  (e.g. 1000 MHz >> 925, 1500 >> 1450 )
  • Check the temperatures for the VRM's (GPU-Z should...give VRM1 and VRM2 readings in the "Sensor" tab)
