Hello everyone,

Lately I have been thinking of buying a new PC. But since my PC was a fair beast back when I got it in 2012, I wonder if it isnt salvagable.

Here are my current specs;

  • Case: Cooler Master Silencio 550
  • Power supply: 700 watt Cooler Master
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 3.60 GHz
  • MoBo: MSI X79A-GD45 (8D) (one slot broke, probably together when my old graphics card busted)
  • Memory: 16GB DDR3 Corsair
  • SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB (new since a few months)
  • Graphics card: GTX 1060 - 6 GB GDDR5 (new since a few months)

I am not worried that these components wont be able to carry the games I want to play (Diablo 3, Overwatch, Fallout 4), but I want to prevent having them break on me and then having to replace them. Specially since the motherboard is already showing signs of deterioration.

Thanks in advance for any tips :)

What psu exactly?

Really I don't see much that can be changed, except maybe the mobo. But it seems to be fine for the most part so it doesn't seem worth upgrading. A 3820 is still a decent beast today.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

I am not entirely sure what power supply it is exactly, I would have to open op my pc for that..

if I would upgrade the motherboard, would it be wise to upgrade the memory as well? Or is the advantage I would gain from upgrading DDR3 to DDR4 not worth it?

Intel is pretty stagnant in performance gains between gens. The only thing I'd change is the mobo if it's having problems, pref with a non used one.

Only reason the 2500k rig is retired is the expensive ROG board died and the cheap MSI replacement off eBay is starting to show issues as well. Intel chips are like tanks, can't say the same for the motherboards lol..

Yeah, really not much worth upgrading, still a perfectly adequate system. If you were to buy a new motherboard, I'd probably just say go with a new socket, get DDR4 RAM and a new CPU. X299 or ThreadRipper could be a decent CPU upgrade, but pricey and not necessary.

Other than that, if your current PSU isn't great quality, you could upgrade that.
