Exchange surface pro 4 core m3 for i5 model?

Go to solution Solved by Droidbot,

get a refund and wait for Surface Pro refresh with Kaby Lake CPUs as they have a vp9 decoder onboard whereas Skylake says it can decode VP9 but in reality can't do a good job of it

I bought surface pro 4 a less than 7 days ago, and am absolutely loving it. The problem is, if i play 1440p 60fps video or anything higher than that(including 4k), there is horrible lag and stutter. The problem only occurs in chrome. Edge runs it just fine, but most of the videos don't have any option higher than 1080p in edge.

The thing is, as a pc enthusiast, i also own a i7 macbook air and hp elitebook 8560p(running windows 7), they donot suffer any horrible lag or anything playing the same exact video on chrome.

The thing is, i am still under their return period and can exchange it with a i5 model, 4gb ram. But i have heard reports that i5 doesn't necessarily fix that problem at all.

The funny thing though, after installing an extension, which bypasses vp9 codec and uses h264 codec results in a smoother video. But still i didn't need to do that in my windows 7 hd 8560p laptop(2nd gen i7,4gb ram, hd 6470m dgpu) or on my mac.

So i was looking for suggestion, should i exchange it for an i5? My main usage will be light office work like google docs or microsoft office, streaming videos and sometimes games to it, and finally, might be doing some light coding. But it will be extensively used for note taking and writing in one note.

Thanks in advance.

The thing is because of compression and stuff, playing back 4K video is really hard for computers, you need good discrete graphics for that, as for the MacBook Air and HP, they probably just have screens so low-res that they don't have as hard of a time.  Mac OS is also just really well optimised as well as all the Apple software because all the blame would be on them.....   xD

How wrong would I be in suspecting that this is a thermal throttling issue along with an overall CPU capability issue?

CPU R7 1700    Motherboard Asus Prime X370 Pro  RAM  24GB Corsair LPX 3000 (at 2933Mhz)    GPU EVGA GTX1070 SC  Case Phanteks Enthoo Pro M

I checked the thermals and monitored the cpu spike real time, there was no throttling, the cpu usage spike however was really high.

That actually makes me wonder, will an i5 necessarily solve it? or is it because of the high res screen of surface pro 4?

Yeah that might be the case, both hp and air runs on 1440x900 whereas sp4 runs on 27xxx18xx resolution.

But would an i5 solve the issue?

I have the i5 version myself, and I love it. I have not had any real issues with 1440p video, though I rarely watch things at that resolution because of my internet connection.

Only video I've had an issue with was a digital copy of a 4K movie.

You could exchange it for the i5 version, or refund it and wait for the Pro 5, as Kaby Lake CPUs have a dedicated decoder for advanced video codecs like VP9.

Well here in canada microsoft has a huge sale going on surface pro 4 devices, which makes every pro 4 model at least 200 canadian dollars cheaper than the equivalent surface pro kaby lake models.

Also i donot know, but the microsoft store has one kaby lake sp in their store, and i felt like the new surface is not as smooth as the sp4 when it comes to note taking. The pen takes a huge giant step back and so do the screen of the surface

Can you please do me a favor?

Can you play this video on your chrome browser on sp4 and tell me if there is any lag or stutter?

Its battlefield 1 1440p 60 fps clip

Pls do set it for 1440p 60 fps mode.

I do apologize for asking.

There is some stutter toward the beginning, but it mostly clears up as the video loads more in. Buffering is a killer though :P

Cheap landlord downgraded the internet connection where I live.

Thank you very much for your help.

Yeah i have the same issue, like it stutters, loads up a bit, plays smoothly, then again stop, loads up a bit, then plays again.

When i installed the extension, which bypasses the vp9 codec, the problem is gone.

Just to make sure it is not your internet connection, what speed do you have, mind if i ask?

And again i do appreciate your helping me out

Buddy i cannot express my enough gratitude. Thanks a ton. I mean you really helped me a lot and i don't have words to thank you.

It seems like the problem is with vp9 codec, because since you live in california(which should have a nearby google server to handle the load) and its 11:12 pm at night(which means most people are not heavily using the net), i suspect your speed is good enough to stream it. I have similar speed.

Keep in mind though that I share my bandwidth with 4 people. Two of them are watching Netflix atm, so my bandwidth is a bit saturated.

Until a month ago, my connection was 125 Mb/s down and 15 Mb/s up.
