Multiple storage devices introduction. (SSD/HDD)

JerrBear

I've only worked with computers with one (large) storage SSD/HDD.

This summer I'm building a PC for a friend with a 128 GB boot drive and 1 TB HDD.

I also plan to add an M.2 NVME SSD to my current rig as space has become a slight concern (not for raw files - keep them on an external drive).

How do computers with multiple drives work? Does act like an external hard drive? I know a little about RAID... It can make things faster by splitting the read/writes between two or more drives.. right?

What should I expect?

  • CPU = i7 5930k
  • Cooler = Corsair H100i
  • RAM = Dominator Platinum 32GB DDR4-2666
  • Storage = Samsung 850 Pro 1TB
  • GPU = EVGA GTX 1080ti FTW3
  • PSU = Corsair 750D
  • PSU = Corsair 1000W
  • Monitor = Asus PG278Q

It just acts as another drive, the PC will just boot off of the primary drive (Obviously put windows on SSD).

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

You will set the drives to any letter that you'd like (b/c Linux is weird, I won't go into it. Fight me, bro!) Each one is accessible by itself.

You can certainly try hot-swap bays or hot-swap in the case. You can just yank them out, gently, and replace them.

Depends on the RAID level. Wikipedia has a nice guide on the levels if you're interested.

Thanks for the visuals (and thanks to everyone for the explanations, I read all of your posts)!

Is your 1TB HDD just empty or how is it formatted? I know the way the windows installation drive is formatted.

Did you look at my name? xD Also it's formatted with an NTFS file system, same as a boot drive. Just imagine it as a giant USB key that's plugged in over sata
