Which CPU will be better for gaming for now and in the long run

It is worse for avg. now but it will age better than the 7700k and minimums matter a lot more if you have at least 60FPS. The 1700+good gpu like 1070 or cheaper vega when it comes out will at least get 60FPS and have very good minimums. Even with a 1 FPS fluctuation it looks much worse.

Depending on your GPU and screen, it could either be the fastest single-thread performer or the cheapest.

In other words, the question is kind of useless (beyond working as a way to start flame wars).

Refresh rate?

For 1080p 60Hz I'd simply go with the cheapest. All of them will do 60 FPS in anything, and your GPU as well. For 144Hz, it depends on what the 980 ti can do in 1080p in the games you play.

Personally, I would get a 1600 or 1700 depending on your budget. Yes Intel offers better performance right now, but in the long run (especially because Intel is putting more cores in their consumer cpus next year) the ryzen cpus will age better.

Make two (or four) builds with identical parts and judge performance to price based on the overall price.

The 1700's minimum fps is only better when streaming, because having 16 threads reduces the lag spikes and dropped frames.

When only gaming, the 7700k still has better average, minimum, and maximum fps in the large majority of games.

with literally any important apps in the background, ryzen is better. I listen to spotify all the time so yeahhhhhh

Uh, idk how good or crappily optimized spotify is, but you should be able to have music playing in the background with 0 effect on your fps.

Intel is going crazy, they are going to put 6 cores in consumer (a very good thing) and put 4 core CPUs in HEDT platforms and disable features. Like hundreds of dollars for RAID.

I mean sometimes I will be watching someone else's stream while gaming or I might listen to music would that bring my frames down significantly

I am upgrading cpu gpu mobo and ram

Budget is 700 to 950 is necessary

I just wouldn't support any Intel product.

 

My system works fine on everything else and I have never gotten a BSOD.
