Is i5-4460 still viable for gaming?

Go to solution Solved by DarkBlade2117,

CPU is fine, though I don't advise a 3GB GTX 1060. Either upgrade to a 6GB variant or find an RX 570/580.

Hello there. I own a intel i5-4460 and i am currently upgrading my pc. I am very low on budget so i want to ask if the i5 4460 is still viable for gaming as i would like to keep it so that i can spare some money.

I want to upgrade my 8800gt nvidia gforce for a gtx 1060 3gb.

So is it worth to have this i5 and the gtx1060 for gaming? I am mostly playing games like Cities Skyline, League of Legends, gta 5 and cs go.

Thanks for help, i can help with further infos about the setup i have now and what i am currently upgrading.

Using a 4460 currently and couldn't be happier with not much problems in gaming ,since my gpu is the freaking bottlenecker. So I'll say it's still for a couple more years perhaps.

Still got a lot of time left in your system, save some money and keep playing.

4460 should be allright. If I were you I would save a little longer for the GTX1060 6GB. THe 3Gb is a bit less.

My brother is gaming no prob with a 6gb 1060, and an fx 6300, one but is doing great with a 970, and athlon x4 860k, another is doing great as well with an i5 2400 or 2400 i cant remember with a 970, and yet another buddy is doing great with an i7 920 at stock with an rx 480, and all are doing great with ultra settings at 1080p

Nothing to see here, move along

I am quite unhappy with amd graphics as i used to own a combo between a intel cpu and an amd and i was quite disappointed about all the blackscreens i had in the past.

Can you tell me why is the 6gb of 1060 better than 3gb version?

3GB is really pushing the limits for 1080p.

And what AMD GPU did you own? That issue sounds like something completely irrelevant to owning an Intel CPU. In all honesty, it sounds like an issue that could of been fixed fairly easily.

It was some radeon hd not even for gaming that i owned in to say 2005? It's been a pretty long time since then and i know that amd has evolved quite drastically since years but still, i am the type of guy who is more like intel - nvidia. And it was my first pc i bought already build.

I mean... 12 years? Seriously shouldn't hold a grudge against someone that long... Really only 2 reasons to justify, maybe 3 to buying an Nvidia card over AMD now a days but either way RX 580s/570s are out of stock everywhere right now and if you ahppen to find them they are $40 overpriced but I'd check r/Buildapcsales and just fine the cheapest 6GB 1060 you can

use the outervision PSU calculator to see if the CPU/GPU/HDD/RAM etc combo will be enough - www.outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

basic answer is yes .. but double check

So, thank you guys for the fast answers.

TL;DR

The cpu is fine, imma stick with it for the next couple of years.

The gpu, i will buy the 6gb version of 1060gtx instead of the 3gb for obvious reasons.

Thank you for help.
