Internet speed issues

For the last few years, my family has been using wi-fi that a local service provides. As far as we know, the internet speed is extremely poor (400 kb/s download speed)  and the internet is rated at a much higher speed than it is performing. The modem is a dlink (idk the model), and as far as we know, is several years outdated. Would buying a new modem improve internet speed? And if so, any recommendations? Preferably under $150. Thanks.

What is the rated speed you pay for? Without knowing that it's hard to say if upgrading your hardware will fix anything as you may just be getting the speed you pay for.

If you plug a computer in using an ethernet cable, does the speed increase? Try running a speed test on both WiFi and on ethernet to see what the difference is. It may just be that the WiFi on the unit you have is bad.

I had the same average download speed at my home too, in Australia, when I had ADSL2+. No matter which modem (each time id upgrade to a higher rated modem) I purchased it would be the same speed (400 kB/s average, 650 peak closer to midnight).

we recently changed to NBN (100/40) and we get around 10.5 MB/s peak, 7MB/s average
