I am going to buy a 16 GB (2 x 8) ram kit for my new build soon and my choices are G.Skill Trident Z RGB or the Corsair Vengeance LED RGB. I prefer the Trident Z but I have heard about issues with the lighting going off and creating problems with the RAM. How true are these claims and are they serious enough that it would be a smarter choice to go with the Corsair one ?

Thanks In Advance

Hm I've never heard of these issues.

Trident Z is a bit better I think, though vengeance is usually a little cheaper. If you want a good comparison video Linus did a pretty good one.

IMO the RGB effect on the Trident is unbeatable because of how openly visible the light bar is. Even regular Trident RAM looks better than Vengeance LED IMO... also the Trident RGB isn't as tall IIRC

Well the price difference is not that much. Regarding the issues there are a lot of bugs related to the lighting that cause the Trident Z's to act up and some people have said that they needed to RMAs like 2 or 3 times till they got a unit that is working others did stuff to the RAM using Thaiphoon Burner to get them to work and I would like to avoid that.

Linus's Video was talking mainly about cosmetics and price and slightly touched on the fact that the lighting software (at that time ) only worked with ASUS Mobos and it was in very early beta.

Thanks ayway

Yeah I know the Trident really looks much better but the issues worry me and IIRC both are almost as tall as each other and the Vengeance ones allow you to remove the plastic stuff so you have the full LED bar visible.

Thanks anyway

Very true but I don't think I will require such elaborate lighting effects and at least Corsair seem to have QC at somewhat acceptable levels
I will keep reading the G.Skill forums hoping one of the next software updates fix the problems otherwise to avoid problems I will probably go with Corsair

Thanks again :)

So what ram now?

I wen with the Corsair one because I prefer finished products rather than highly experimental stuff; my shipment is due to arrive any day now will update if I have any issues.

Yes the vengeance looks nice as it isn't too tall or a.k.a normal profile ram

Yeah and the thing that made me choose Corsair  is that they released a finished product. It would've  made sense for G-Skill to just let ASUS handle the RGB through their software, but they just copied ASUS's software so bad that their own software kills their RAM

That is a good reason! May get the Vengeance RGB for future system!

How true are these claims and are they serious enough that it would be a smarter choice to go with the Corsair one ?

The issues with the RGB RAM are due to the RGB lighting module being controlled through a non-standard writing method to the RAMs EEPROM (read only memory) which in no way should ever have end-users writing data to. This portion of the RAM stick contains the critical SPD information such as the JEDEC and XMP profiles that allow the motherboard to set the correct voltages, timings, and clock speeds.

The G.Skill RGB control software is still in beta, and as such several bugs have been identified such as the RAM being soft-bricked by incorrect writes to the RAM corrupting the SPD. Many of the causes for these bugs have been identified, and many have been resolved. My first G.Skill RGB RAM kit was bricked, and I had to send it back to the shop. The replacement RAM EEPROM was corrupted the when the RGB control software was installed (before it was even run), however at least the system still POSTs.

The Corsair RGB RAM uses effectively the same write-access system, and will not be guaranteed to be free of these issues. The product has only been on the market for a much shorter time, and there has been less customer hands on-testing to identify potential issues compared to G.Skill's. There were many different compatibility issues which caused various corruption issues on different systems with the G.Skill RAM, it is still unlikely that all of the causes have been identified and resolved. Use RGB RAM at your own risk.

The RAM can be controlled through the Asus software just requires you have an Asus motherboard, and appears safer than using G.Skill's poorly supported "Corruptron 9000", I mean RGB control software.
