Disk Cloning software

Trying to clone some stuff from an HDD to an SSD and was wondering what cloning software I should use.

If you're okay with a Linux based solution have a (strong) look at Clonezilla, it is amazing for this kind of stuff and backups in general. Have no clue how to do that cleanly under windows though.

What kind of "stuff"? That's a pretty vague term.

It's a full windows system from another PC.

If moving from one PC to another, I'd just do a fresh install of Windows. Cloning can give issues, even if not moving from one machine to another, so a fresh install is honestly the best way to go.

So should i just backup the files I need on a different drive and then install windows on the SSD?

Yes. Cloning should not be done when moving from one system to another. You can just install Windows on the SSD and copy your files off the other drive from wherever they are.

Unless it's a laptop of the same product line and features you want a clean install or if it's a clone of your existing system you can clone it. If different motherboard than a clone is not the way to go.

+1 for macrium reflect, it's free but because it's so good, I might even get the paid version one day, cos' they deserve it.

 

As it seems it's going from different hardware configs, Macrium has a very handy 'image browse' feature, which makes it (your original PC) look like an external hard drive. Very useful for keeping clutter down on the new machine.
