Is this a good choice for hosting game servers?

Right now my current solution is 2 core 2 quad systems, one with 8GB of RAM and one with 4GB of RAM. I'm wanting to step my game up a little on the cheap. I'm just looking to host some game servers, like Minecraft with lots of plugins and lots of players.

Waddaya think? I was also thinking of just buying a used 8230e and am3+ motherboard as I have a 16gb DDR3 RAM kit laying around. I could probably get that for a little over 100$.

i7 2600k @ 5GHz 1.49v - EVGA GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 - 16GB DDR3 2000MHz Corsair Vengence

Asus p8z77-v lk - 480GB Samsung 870 EVO w/ W10 LTSC - 2x1TB HDD storage - 240GB SATA SSD w/ W7 - EVGA 650w 80+G G2

3x 1080p 60hz Viewsonic LCDs, 1 glorious Dell CRT running at anywhere from 60hz to 120hz

Model M w/ Soarer's adapter - Logitch g502 - Audio-Techinca M20X - Cambridge SoundWorks speakers w/ woofer

The server you linked is meh. It's not terrible it has 16 theards and 32GB of RAM so would do the job just fine but it's also brilliant as E5520 are still slow CPUs IPC wise so yea it could be better so look around also see if you could get a little cheaper through a make an offer then go for it

I would recommend checking the Minecraft forums for what the minimum or recommended specs are. Hosting a game server isn't as intense on the hardware itself.

Let's say I could score one of these Dells for 150$, or I could score a AM3+ motherboard and 8320 for 100$ or less, which would you go for? I already have a 2x8 kit of DDR3 laying around, and another 2x4 kit. RAM isn't as much of an issue, I doubt I'd even come close to using that 24gb, the 32/48gb servers are just plain overkill as the CPU would be holding the server back long before that much RAM could be used. A 8320e could also easily be clocked to 4ghz, though obviously with lower IPC and more power draw.

I already checked, hosting a big server with lots of plugins like multi worlds and stuff would make good use of this hardware. Heck, a 15 player server I'm hosting right now with a single world is giving my 8GB RAM OC'd q6600 a workout already, and I want to expand way more. Minecraft has become a lot more intensive/unoptimized, back in the beta times you could host a really basic server on a Pentium iii. xD

Go intel never go AM3+ it anit worth it, Also with those servers they might need ECC

The server you linked is good for the job. Having faster cores and more RAM will help. The Gamepedia page recommends an SSD for fast writes and reads (probably since the latency of the disks could cause issues).

Well, ECC is irrelevant for hosting MC servers. But, I just realized a big reason to go for the Xeon server instead. I'm pretty sure I could upgrade the Xeons to 3ghz ones down the line which would absolutely destroy the FX. God, I was just hoping to find an excuse to put this RAM to use lmao. xD

Yeah, I'll wait and try to get a deal on one of these Dells.

ECC might be, but it might nor work if you combine non ECC with ECC. And you might be able to do that yea

Yeah, I was planning on using a 64gb SSD I have laying around, as MC servers don't take up much space at all. My current server barely takes up 4GB, so there's no way I'd need more than 64gb. I do plan on also adding a 1tb WD blue to it for backups. Can't go wrong with one of those cheap bastards. :D

I don't have a reason to mix the RAM, as 32GB is already overkill as is.

The R710 has many configurations - try and find one with some X5670's if you can as theyre hyper threaded and have a much higher clock speed. You could also upgrade this system to dual X5670's for a decent price.  You may also want to put an SSD in it for the servers as they can be quite disk intensive - especially if youre doing renders of the maps in Minecraft.
