If you go to processes what does it say is using up the disk?

It might be wannacry encrypting your data

1. If that were the case it would be completely encrypted already

2. I'm pretty sure malwarebytes wouldn't do crap against it at this point.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

You know that Malwarebytes won't be able to detect WannaCry, right? And you also know that WannaCry would have encrypted the OP's files within seconds, right? And you do know that WannaCry will push your CPU to 100%, right?

No that's why I said it might

There are just normal background tasks using up the disk.

Also, it does say 33% usage in the processes but it is still at 100% usage since I have 3 drives in my system, two of which are not being used at the moment.

Just using google, windows 10 uses 20gigs give or take.  You said that in addition to windows, you also have your programs on it.  Using google again, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive uses about 12 gigs give or take.  So just between the OS and CSGO, there is a good 32 gigs of space used which is just over half your drive space.  Don't know what games or software you have, just using CSGO as an example.

So, given the information above let's assume that you have several games installed in addition to the OS.  Those programs alone with the OS will run your 64 gig SSD to the full point IMHO.  What ever space the OS and the software and games is not using could be used by the SSD as a swap file or cache.  And this problem would get even worse if you were trying to run multiple software or games at the same time.

Only solution, provided this is the problem, would be to limit the number of software and games running at the same time, increase the size of the SSD by purchasing another, larger drive, or by some how setting up some sort of swap file.

Just my humble opinion, hope you get it figured out.  Good Luck.

I have all my games on my hard drive, no games on my SSD. I will try and delete some programs and see if that does anything, though. The thing that puzzles me is that the SSD is at 100% usage and it is usually only reading and writing less than 1 MB of information.

When I installed Windows, it only seemed to take up around 8-10 GB, but I am not sure. Also, I manually set my paging file to 12 GB, so that is taking up some space as well.

One of the things we have to consider is how we define the word "usage".  Like google says, 20 gigs give or take.  So lets say that you are using the file manager and the web browser.  Those are just small parts of the overall OS software that we are "using" but don't forget the rest of the OS still occupies a very large amount of space on the SSD even though we are not using such things as the media viewer and the music player.

For example, I play World of Warcraft and have been since the very beginning.  According to google, World of Warcraft occupies 30 gigs.  My C: drive is a Samsung Evo Pro 512 SSD but if I were using a SSD like the one that you have, my C: drive would be half-full even if I was not playing the game.  Can you imagine what the disk usage would be like with that limited amount of space?  Pretty busy considering the OS at 20 and WoW at 30 and the cache and/or swap file. Bang, pretty busy.  Just think if I threw in a 12 gig swap file like you did on top of the 50 gigs used between the OS and WoW, well I think you get what I'm trying to say.  I'm not good with words sometimes.

I think what I'm trying to say is that even though we are not using a particular piece of software at any given point in time, the software still exists on the SSD occupying space therefore it is still being "used" in the sense that the OS is playing games with it moving things around, etc., while doing its thing with the swap file.

Sorry, I'm real good with words sometimes when I'm trying to explain something so if there is something else that I can say, or something that I can do to help, please don't hesitate to ask.

Open Task Manager > Go to Performance > Go to Resource Monitor > Click on the Disk tab

This will give you a much more detailed view on what processes are doing the read/write and which drive/file theyre accessing.

I would also recommend temporarily disabling any antivirus/system tools you might have doing active scanning (McAfee, Norton, AVG, MalwareBytes, S&D, CCleaner, etc....) and run a chkdsk to check ( Open CMD > type chkdsk C: /f ) and do a reboot - see if that resolves the issue. Antivirus/Malware scanners may be having a problem if theyre hitting inconsistancies.

I really wish people wouldnt jump straight to Malware without even knowing whats installed on his system :/

P.S WannaCry would complete within minutes on a 64GB SSD, so no it's not WannaCry
