I have a prebuilt Acer Aspire m3910(G) with an i6 650 and OEM motherboard.

The original GPU that came with the PC (GT320) started to have issues so I upgraded to a 1050ti and I'm looking to upgrade the CPU to better suit the card.

Is it possible for me to upgrade the CPU on an OEM motherboard and if so what CPU if any would be best suited for the graphics card.

pc service manual: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1221/Acer-Aspire-M3910-G.html

i5 650 socket type: LGA 1156

nothing much can be done really, it's an OEM board with an OEM PSU so those thing needs to be gone sooner or later, the case however looks like it can support regular ATX PSU but not sure if new board will fit, the manual you linked with pics are so blurry,

and an upgrade of same socket is like a sidegrade at most, 1st intel core are so old now

Important stuff from the manual:

Quote

Processor

•Socket Type: Intel Socket T LGA 1156 pin

•Socket Quantity: 1

Processor Type:

•Intel Lynnfield / Clarkdale

•95W + 65W FMB

Chipset

PCH: Intel H57

You could go up to an i7 880, but Lynnfield i7's have a 95W TDP versus your current 73W TDP. You'll probably be able to get away with the additional 20W, but considering you've also upgraded your GPU, I can't be 100% sure your 300W PSU can handle it under load and considering its age.

I'd keep an eye on ebay and snipe an i7 800 series if a total overhaul is out of the question (which is most likely is). It would be a considerable upgrade, but not sure you would truly notice it in most/any games.

either drop in a first gen I7 and get a cooler or upgrade to whatever your budget alows for, a G4650+B250 motherboard and DDR4 RAM would be a good upgrade

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Assuming it's got 16GB of RAM (4X4GB (I doubt it)), 2 120mm fans, gaming mouse and keyboard, headset and no optical drive, load wattage (according to Cooler Master) would be 290W which would be fine. But only just. This plan also relies on the availability of a i7 880. But depending on if OP has the money a newer system, cause a pentium G4560 is faster than a i5 650 and is relatively affordable at £57 a new system would probably be about £180-200. Reusing the same GPU and case

The CPU can most likely be upgraded to a i7 860,870,880, or the quad core i5's (which are fully quad core, not like how your 650 is a dualcore with HT)but first check for BIOS updates and compatible hardware, and see the listed compatible hardware, but the thing if you upgrade to one the processors I listed, and it works, those do not have onboard graphics, means the onboard graphics cannot be used anymore in cases when some failure occurs, but you can swap it out to your old 650 and have onboard graphics. But check if your PSU can handle how much the system after CPU upgrade needs,if it is comaptible,if not,get a better PSU,if it is not a SFF system.

Well, the 8xx i7  would be a big upgrade from that i5 since it is a 4 core 8 thread while the 6xx range of i5's is only dual core but with hyperthreading,he can upgrade to a true quad core i5,since the 7xx i5's are pure quad cores, but from that series and above, there is no onboard graphics, plus a i7 isn't so much higher in price than the 7xx range of i5's,and there are cheaper i7 870's for $26 on CeX

I agree it's a considerable upgrade, as I mentioned earlier. My concern is that for gaming, I can't be so sure that dual core + HT vs. quad core + HT will justify the cost of the upgrade. I see used i7 860 CPUs going for $70+ USD on ebay, which is why I'd recommend to snipe an open auction or keep your eyes peeled for aggressively priced "Buy It Now/Best Offer" listings. Check local Craigslist listings and local salvage shops. Maybe find some OEM prebuilts that use Lynnfield i7 processors that folks are scrapping for super cheap as "not working / for parts."

Yeah I think he'll be fine. Page 63 specifies a 500W PSU is in the unit, although earlier pages mention 250W and 300W units; not sure why. I'd defer to the part list.

Ah right that could be an issue then. I suggest the OP actually looks at the PSU then as see what it says, it's it's 250W (Which I doubt because the i5 system uses more than that, think it was 262W) 300W (which again doesn't sound quite right as it's still a tad close to the 262W) or a 500W which the OP is hopping to have. That being said a new system might still be a gopod idea, due to the G4560 being faster than a i7 880 in many ways, excluding multi threaded tasks using more than 4 threads
